It looks like that list is the combined total of both violent crime and property crime in cities with over 100,000 residents from the FBI's Universal Crime Reports.

Personally I think combining both violent and property crime can make it harder to get a full picture. Some cities may be higher in violence, others higher in property type crimes.

If the list is done looking at only violent crime from the FBI reports (Murder/manslaughter; forcible rape, robbery, and aggravated assault) it is a different order, for example Berkeley falls from #2 to #20 for just violent crime.

It might be useful to have different lists for violent crime and property crime rates.

Same cities but using only violent crime in 2010 (per 100,000 residents):
Oakland 1,530
Stockton 1,381
Richmond 1,137
Sacramento 870
Antioch 846
San Bernardino 815
Salinas 806
Inglewood 752
Vallejo 719
San Francisco 702
Modesto 686
Bakersfield 631
Fresno 626
Lancaster 606
Long Beach 588
Victorville 582
Pomona 574
Palmdale 567
Los Angeles 559
Berkeley 519
El Monte 492
Santa Rosa 485
Fairfield 482
Riverside 480
Visalia 462
Concord 451
Hayward 451
Santa Ana 444
Norwalk 439
San Diego 428
Escondido 424
Fontana 394
Pasadena 383
Oceanside 374
Elk Grove 372
Downey 368
Moreno Valley 367

Since these are crime rates, (i.e. rate per 100,000) the city size should have little to do with anything.

Some of the most violent cities in the US are not that large (like Flint, East St. Louis, etc.).

These are the rate per 100,000 residents which allows a little comparison between different cities.

That is also the rate just within the actual city limits, not the surrounding metro area's cities/suburbs or county areas.

Lets try a comparison between Bakersfield and Tulsa also using the FBI reports:
Bakersfield - population 333,458
Tulsa - population 393,412

Bakersfield - 631 reported violent crimes per 100,000 residents
Tulsa - 1,094 reported violent crimes per 100,000 residents

Bakersfield - 4,557 reported property crimes per 100,000 residents
Tulsa - 5,428 reported property crimes per 100,000 residents

If Bakersfield is "so high", should we say Tulsa is "very high"?
