Maybe you knew this. Maybe you didn't. Steve Jobs always drove a very nice Mercedes AMG SL. His car never had license plates, apparently without constantly getting tickets. How did he do it? He gamed the system.

Mystery solved: Here's how Steve Jobs drove without licence... | Wheels.ca

Why does California excuse new car buyers from having tags for 6 months after purchase?

Sounds like it was more work to change cars every six months than it was to get a plate. It's like spending a dollar to save a quarter.

Here's another way to game the system. When sending local mail, switch the sender's and addressee's addresses and put a two cent stamp on the envelope. The envelope is "returned" to sender (for insufficient postage) but that's the intended destination in the first place.

This doesn't work anymore. The automated systems are smart enough to figure out this trick based on where the mail entered the system. It's also prosecuted as mail fraud these days.

And the last people you want to tick off is USPS!

Saving money and effort wasn't the point. He just wanted to be different. Or maybe he didn't want to have a label. When you are a billionaire, you can afford those tiny conveniences.

Because it can take that long for the plates to arrive from the DMV. I've bought two new cars in the last five years, and each time it took more than two months for the plates to come. And mine was a very ordinary situation. If you've got some oddball situation like a house move in there, I can see it taking several months longer.

Lots of things to admire about Jobs but this isn't one of them. This just seemed silly and a waste of time and kind of petty actually.

The guys in the California Mercedes Benz dealerships who sell and fix those cars are all Americans.
