When your neighbors do not speak English it is difficult to engage in any conversation. When 40% of all drivers have no insurance or a driver's license people tend to be scared. I noticed a climate of fear in Northern OC, LA, and Riverside Counties.

Of course I've witnessed rude people in Cali but that goes for everywhere I've lived thus far. San Diego was lovely and I can't wait to move back.

I'd much rather deal with people ignoring me on the streets then dealing with people preaching to me and telling me how my religion is wrong or how I'm going to hell like I've experienced here in the south.

You walk around, quietly just observe people and you get the sense that Californians can barely tolerate each other and any stranger is considered an @sshole until proven different and what miserable way to go through life THAT is for all concerned! Most people look like they are wound WAAY too tight and about ready to snap or go ballistic at any moment. This place must have the highest blood pressure stats in the nation!

I try to have a good attitude and give this place the benefit of the doubt, but then I go for a walk up my street and see a car getting honked at and getting the finger because they are trying to turn at an intersection. I walk a little further and see a man and woman having a conversation outside their cars on the shoulder of the road with the door wide open with cars and busses having to maneuver over the center line to get around them while they have this arrogant look on their faces to all the world like" what are YOU gonna do about it?" You accidentally make eye contact with someone around here and nine times out of ten you get a look or response back like "what are YOU lookin' at?"

Maybe it's just me, but I travel often and have lived in many other places and have never witnessed this degree of rude/angry people concentrated in one place. Also, a cursory look around this forum shows I am not alone.

I don't think California has cornered the market on a$$holes. I'm sure you're going to encounter them wherever you go. Unfortunately, they're everywhere.

I've seen plenty of spoiled brat attitudes and mentalities in even the smallest farm towns in Kentucky, Indiana, Alabama, etc. It's only getting and going to get worse, methinks.

And Twinkle Toes is right: California hasn't cornered the "negative, rude, impatient, angry people" market, although like I said, there will be a higher overall number here b/c of the population. If you find your way to nouveau riche areas, the market for those types of more, uhm, robust. Anyone been to Mountain View lately? Laguna Beach? A few hours in those places was enough for me. Overall, however, I find that the urban northeast, Florida and some Midwestern cities (i.e.: Louisville, Dayton) have cornered the market pretty well. Just my experience.
