Need to know if you want city, country, desert, mountains, snow, sun, surf, etc...... California has it all! Not much "cheep", but some areas are more affordable than others.

Not the coast. If you are thinking of SF bay area, you will have a commute out SF. Sacramento is pretty nice, but if you want cheap you are probaly going to end up in the valley somewhere. What exactly are you looking for in Cali?

Oh my goodness, most Californians would rather live in New Zealand, and here you are going in the opposite direction.

Of the major cities in California, none are cheap. Country and small village life can be inexpensive in some part of Northern California, but you say you want the big cities, the ocean cities you've seen in movies. I'd say that out of the 3 biggest metropolitan cities (San Diego, Los Angeles, and San Francisco Bay area) .... SF is too expensive, LA is too expensive and dangerous, San Diego is too expensive but not quite so bad as the others, and a little safer than LA. Also you can travel quickly to LA from San Diego if you want to explore it.

If you look on Craigslist.com, you could find some places that are less expensive .... maybe US $1000 would get you into a studio, or less if you want to share an apartment with others.

Oh, remember to get a membership in a Youth Hostel organization. Hostels to reserve in the United States, USA with accommodations in New York, Chicago, San Francisco, California, Miami, Washington DC, Boston Hostelling International USA - US Hostelling Stamp

Default Why would you want to move to Cali?

I just had my cousin come back from New Zealand and they said it was wonderful over there. People are lot more social the environment is a lot cleaner and the lifestyle is a lot slower than here. Do you have a need to live in a fast paced stressed environment. If you do then So Cal is for you. I'm sorry but I can not find a logical reason to move here, unless your rich. I mean the weather is good but unfortunately the smog takes away from the beauty of it. I don't think your going to find the lyfestyle you seen on TV, life in LA is different from what you seen on TV shows and movies.

Javier
