Best place to live in the Susanville/Quincy/Portola/Chester area? (Chico: real estate, showing)

There are a number of villages in this area that advertise startlingly low rental rates for apartments. Anyone know this area? I've only driven through Quincy and Susanville, they seem like cute towns, especially Quincy. You can still find the occasional one-bedroom apartment for under $400 per month.

Go for Quincy - it's a nice place. There is also a 2-year community college there.

My parents retired in Chester and it is beautiful!!!! They lived across the street from the lake with a wonderful veiw of it and I loved visiting them when they were still alive. It is not a place full of excitement if that's what you're looking for, but for a good quality of life in California you couldn't do much better.

I think I'd like living in either Quincy or Chester, but I want to be in a larger place like Susanville in case Bessie the Van breaks down. I see they have a Wal-mart there and probably better medical services, I'm sure at least one decent hospital.

I remember passing through in my gold fever days and panning in the river there for a few minutes .... no color, but there was lots of float. I think the Feather River is also not too far away and is known to be a perrenial producer of nuggets.

I also remember eating a decent pizza there .... what more d'ya need to sustain life: pizza, Wal-Mart, and the gleam of fool's gold in the local river.

Well, I might have a line on a place in the Watsonville farm area, but if that doesn't pan out I'll gird my loins and journey to Susanville.

It really depends on your line of work. Jobs in Susnville, Quincy, and Chester aren't plentiful. But, there are some great jobs that are available from time to time. The state is the biggest empolyer in Susanville, and jobs come open quite often. The hospital in Susnville is just a few years old. They are not offering new services, and brought in more doctors, so that is great! Both Quincy & Susanville have jr colleges.

Chester is a great little town too. Its more expensive because of the Lake Almanor community. Alot of folks from Chester drive to Susanville or Chico for shopping. Alot of people in Susanville drive to Reno for shopping.

I like Quincy too. Its a great town and beautiful!

I was browsing and read some posts about Quincy, CA
I currently live in IN, but my brother owes a home in Quincy. I told him I would be interested in buying it or leasing it if it becomes available.
I am retired, did work for the US Forest Service in the early 60's and love the mountains. I have been to Quincy one back in the 80's, is it the same beautiful town today as it was then?

Oh, this thread has resurrected! FWIW, I came, saw, and conquered Susanville. After about 4 months I left. The startlingly low rents weren't there once I arrived, it turned out that real estate companies owned most of the apartment buildings in town and had been running the same ads for many years showing rents that were probably from the 90's.

There WERE some cheap rentals offered by individuals on occasion though.

I think the whole region is less expensive than just about anywhere in California because of geographic isolation, lack of things to do, and extreme temperature variations. But there were some very nice things too, Eagle Lake is pretty, and Reno NV is less than 2 hours away from Susanville (much further though from Quincy).
