Default SLO / Santa Maria area, stroke care

This question has a narrow focus, any healthcare professionals or those who have experienced stroke and stroke care in your family.

If a person suffers a stroke / brain aneurism is one of the local hospitals superior to others for care, emergency care, essentially preserving the life and as much function as possible of a stroke victim.

The choices as far as I know are, Sierra Vista, French, Marian.

Thanks.

Hopefully someone can give you more complete info than this, but here is a starting point until then.

I remembered reading about this earlier in the year. I was doing research for someone else.

Quote:
Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center in San Luis Obispo has earned The Joint Commission's Gold Seal of Approval for certification as a Primary Stroke Center.

Sierra Vista is the only primary stroke center between Santa Barbara and San Jose.

There is an old Arabic saying, "no man knows the country of his death" That is generally true. Some people know how they will check out of hotel earth. I do, no male in our family has made it past 64 years in our family in four generations, stroke in the left temporal lobe, some sort of genetic problem. I am pushing that barrier now, and would like to beat the odds.

Gotta admit, it sharpens your appreciation for the important stuff in life, like family and empty land. Which is the major reason I don't think much of the complainers and whiners, stick to the important stuff and the state of the State, isn't all that important.

My wife made me retire a few years ago, she told me she wanted me to croak out on the land having fun rather than at work, and that works for me.

Ah, but there is the interesting drama of every generational male having a new set of genes inserted into the roulette ...

I knew a guy once -- incredibly awful person -- who always said every male in his family died by early 60's (heart problems) ... he was one of the very few people I can honestly say absolutely deserved to die young and in a worst way ... disgusting individual ... just heard about his passing a couple years ago ... he was in his mid-90's when he finally blessed us with departure.

Yes, feeding another set of genes into the equation may change the outcome, one prefers that.

A friend of mine had a bad stroke and he was sent to Marion. They made him do all kinds of physical therapy. He was in there for two weeks. I have no idea if it was better than any other hospital in the area, but I know he had a good doctor with good insurance.

Marion is a good hospital, to a great extent, any major medical emergency is a bit of a crap shoot, My family has always used it, all four of us kids were born in its predecessor, Sisters Hospital. I will do some more research, find out what makes Sierra Vista different, What emergency care for stroke is different than another hospital.

One advantage the Central Coast has, is that doctors and medical professionals like living here, so there are many good doctors. Truckee/Tahoe is the same way, excellent medical care due to geography, who'da thunk?

A little bit further out is Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital, which is the biggest hospital between the Bay Area and LA area. For acute stroke, they have a dedicated neuro-interventional radiologist / endovascular neurosurgeon on site to perform clot busting therapy if symptoms have been <6 hours in duration for maximum benefit and minimal disability afterwards. A dedicated stroke center like this with a neuro-interventionalist is the place you or your loved one wants to be in case of acute stroke as these centers have the best outcomes due to the most advanced therapy with catheter localization of clots and direct thrombolysis of these clots.

They also have a rehabilitation center as well.
