I dunno about Redding (except that I witnessed road rage at one of the I-5 Redding exits).... but all I can say, if you're driving down I-5 you may want to avoid staying in Red Bluff hotels, just a few miles South. Or, you may get a real life interaction with the people from the mugshots website and feel like you're living in the reality Cops show. National chain hotels that are right by the freeway in the general area should be fine, though. I was talking about hotels on Main Street Red Bluff.

Instead, I finally got out of socal and to rural Oklahoma. Not the same but not acres of people and concrete and stripmalls. If I was to come back to California, it would be the extreme north with the pine trees.
I thought about this option too... but realized, eventually, that way up North in the Foothills got too much Appalachian weirdness for me (not the fun kind, and also not the hippy-weirdness like in coastal Redwoods) and way too "boonies", isolated and some really backwards ways that make even rural Alabama (lived there) look urban, also local forests aren't very safe (as was told by more than one ranger already, as criminal element from Central Valley comes up there).... the pine-smelling air is gorgeous, (but they do burn wood stoves a lot there, so this is another issue, and it's often going to be the smell of burning wood rather than fresh pines), parcels with pines, sunsets, the local lakes are gorgeous, but then you might get more than you bargained for.... a decision to weight heavily first and now all ins-and-outs before buying a property there...I'd rather be in Mid-California Foothills (and closer to National parks as well) than up North

I have family in Redding and it's a great place to live if you have work in the area or are retired. I live in Dallas Tx area and I am considering moving there myself....

"insert any town or city here" Smart people don't move anywhere without one unless they have a decent amount of savings to tide them over.

I hope you’re retired or have a job lined up and bring your shotguns Redding has zombie’s see Shasta mugshots.

I’ve been hearing from the folks back home that the Sundial Bridge’s north foundation is at risk of failing. I wonder if that wonderful paper will even bother to write a story on that.

Yeah, it's a sweet place. It has a huge Meth and alcohol problem, and it has one of the highest rates of sex offenders per 100,000 people in the state of California.

And a high unemployment rate = no jobs. You will find a lot of people on welfare or retired in this community.

And the heat can get up to 120 degrees during the Summer.

Anyone thinking of moving to Redding or the surrounding area needs to do their homework.

Read this thread, especially post #180, pretty much says it all:
Considering Redding, CA
