Just curious, how many people are concerned about that wolf?

5? 6?

Apparently 11 pages of city data thread and a major issue on tea bagger websites and a bunch of concerned officials

Interesting that you disdain "tea baggers" yet spend time on teabagger websites. Confirms Eric Hoffer's thesis that extremists have more in common with each other than with non extremists.

Decimal point needs moving by several places. OR-7 has generated a huge amount of interest nationwide, not just in California. The entire subject of the wolf reintroduction of 1995 has created a huge controversy, with emotions and wildly exaggerated claims on both ends of the spectrum running high. There have been several threads on the Montana, Wyoming, and Idaho forums going back years on the topic. The tree hugging, eco-freak greenies think that wolves are just big, cute, cuddly puppy dogs that do no harm and everyone should love. The ranchers and hunters insist that wolves are 4 legged demons from Hell that are multiplying and spreading like rabbits, and that they are going to devour all of the elk and deer and then do the same to their livestock, pets, and children. Those of us that have a pragmatic, feet firmly on the ground, facts first attitude, plus a keen interest in wildlife and being reasonably informed on their behavior, know that both extreme positions are simply not true.

OR-7 faces an uncertain future. Have been unable to find out his weight, but at nearly 3 he is an adult, but still will not reach his maximum size until he is 4 to 6 years old. This being so, he might weigh somewhere between 90 and 110 pounds, more likely in the lower end of this range. This is what an average sized female cougar weighs. The big cat is a far more efficient hunter than a young lone wolf will be. If OR-7 does not die from some kind of human interaction he just may starve to death. He could be killed by a cougar or bear, or by attacking an ungulate too big to handle by himself. Wolves lead extremely hazardous lives with a high mortality rate. Only a few live to old age in the wild. Most of us wish OR-7 well, but he is going to need some luck in order to survive and thrive.

They belong to the same species so calling it that isn't inaccurate.

The California Grizzly... Ursus arctos californicus. It is a subspecies of Brown Bear and is extinct, last one killed at Horse Corral Meadows east of Fresno in 1924, if I recollect correctly.

The only bear species in California at this time is the Black Bear, Ursus Americanus.

Blackshoe, yes, a lone wolf has a big problem.

Everyone else is just fine with there being a few more wolves and a few less deer. (Sort of like it was before hunters with rifles and sniper scopes and without any respect for the environment got to Montana in the first place.)
People who know little of nature have a one dimensional view of things. Predators like wolves keep wild populations healthy by killing off the sick and weak animals. Those that can spread diseases often to domestic livestock. Also with the absence of wolves, coyote populations have exploded and they are a bigger threat to ranchers than wolves are. wolves returning means lower coyote numbers and wolves are the only thing that seems to be able to curtail coyote numbers. Human hunters killing coyotes only helped increase their populations as the coyotes responded by having larger litters and breeding more often. If people just let things be and stop thinking that they actually own nature, so laughable since nature reminds us who's boss every now and then with an epidemic or plague, things would be fine for the most part.

Most traps are illegal in Ca. Most so called law abiding citizens make exceptions for themselves.

Edit: most trapping of certain animals on certain public lands.

Interesting quandary...Between the rights of the individual, and the stewardship of the environment.
If you have an Opsrey take a chicken, something is seriously wrong.
