I am currently planning my adventure to California(Santa Cruz area)...

I am wondering if anyone has any experience on the actual move from coast to coast...I would love to be able to drive/ride a train to see the scenery across the states...has anyone taken a train doing this?

Flying would be okay too I am just worried about be restricted to the amount of luggage I can bring with me...

Traveling across land would mean a much longer trip along with more expenses going towards meals/stays....I'm also thinking if I took a train I could bring more luggage(maybe not though?)

I've driven across country more than once but i haven't taken a train .... it sounds fun though but i don't know whether or not you can bring more luggage on a train than on a plane.
You can always ship what you can't fit in the car, train or plain.

Flying is barely more expensive than Greyhound. Amtrak is pointless and more expensive unless you want to use it for sentimental reasons.

I've taken a bus across country (years ago ... what a drag it was) and i've driven and i can't stand to fly ... i won't.
If i couldn't drive, i'd take the train.
It sounds fun and i bet it's a lot more comfortable and relaxing than a bus.

Flying is usually cheaper than any other way - gas, meals, motels, tolls, all add up.
You can fly coast-to-coast for $300 if you search for deals.

Amtrak limits you to 2 bags. They have spot searches of bags, but I have only seen them do this once, but they are set up to do so. The train takes 4 days. This can, and probably should, be broken up in some way. Say, for example, stay overnight in one city, then take the train to another point, stay overnight there. Amtrak does offer tour packages of various cities and in various packages. Something to consider.

There are choices as to sleeping accomodations, the more you pay, the bigger the room and more ammenities. For 4 days, I'd probably splurge and get the mid-priced room, which has it's own toilet and shower.

The food on-board that comes with the ticket for sleeping cars is GOOD!! Booze (and food, too) is expensive, esp. the wine, we brought a bottle of our own along.

Train travel can be nostalgic and fun, but it is slow. We fly to CA from the Philly area. Much as I hate to fly, it did only take 6 hours, not 4 days.
