Can't hardly beat living on a boat for earthquake proof
That said (and meant
) ... woodframed, log, concrete, underground, earth-bermed, rammed earth, sod, cobb, straw bale, metal shipping container, etc etc etc .... each have their own place to be the perfect solution ... depends on climate conditions, economics, elevations, surrounding vegetation, views, winds, rains, on and on and on.
Wood frame will withstand an earthquake very well. But so will cobb, straw, underground and others. My main cabin in the San Juans is solid, vertical 2x6 walls with a 12" thick dirt roof supporting gardens ... blends right in to the environment ... can't even see it a'tall from the air (in yer face Google Earth!) ... built it myself, alone ... fun project ... plenty warm but breathes extremely well with ambient humidity and temperatures ... can drive a loaded dump truck into it and barely knock a picture off the walls ... not a square inch of toxic treated wood in the place ... no vapor barriers or insulation in the solid wood walls ... barrier sills between concrete perimeter foundation and Doug. fir walls are ironwood strips (which will out last chemically treated wood indefinitely).
Takes some thinkin' and ponderin' to figger out what suits which place and lifestyle best. And then, all said and done, though only 1000 square feet, after a few years living in it: I thought it was pretty great -- but realized I just plain old don't have the slightest interest in living inside a house anymore ... I'll never go back to indoor living ... just rent the houses and cabins out and stick with my vans and boat.
Still like tents, though, too ... recommend 'em.

I have!
And, furthermore, nothing better for coastal living than a boat when a tsunami hits! (If one's boat is seaworthy and one has advance warning.) When the alarm is raised, head out a couple miles and you're good to go ... never feel it hardly ... just rides the swell ... then you putter back in and see if your dock is still there
Got a sailboat here in Hawaii I live on part time ... it survived the recent tsunami here intact ... my old dock, however, was nowhere in sight ... I am now in a different marina
My boats in Washington (that I use in Puget Sound and California) are on the hard for the winter ... at an elevation and position completely protected from any tsunami ... if a really big earthquake hits while I am gone (in Hawaii on the boat as I type this), the Washington boats might I suppose fall off their barrels and stands into the mud ... that would be inconvenient ... but I have dealt with worse in life. In any case, I am not aboard those at this time.

You speaken my language..
Structures designed and meant to be in a given environment, using materials at hand. Thought out construction!!!!.
Yes earth roof structures are cool! I build small structures all the time using materials at hand, some are quite rustic and attractive... I enjoy timber framing, and have always wanted to do wattle and daub infill However, the brittle infill would not be too good in a earthquake or in a cold climate.. While a timber frame with SIPS encasing it would be very strong in a quake.
It is much better to go with the flow of mother nature, best to not battle against the inevitable winner, as we are no different than an ants in her eyes..

Yes, I lean entirely to working with the basics nature has provided -- and away from most everything tech. Wattle and daub is a good old fashioned in-fill, but obviously not structural. Cobb, however, is wattle and daub's beefy cousin -- and will stand earthquake like few other techniques. Wattle and daub is pretty thin cover ... cobb is massive yet the straw content in the mud acts as a flexible rebar. There are cobb homes in New Zealand a couple hundred years old that have withstood multiple massive earthquakes in communities where even wood frame building were all demolished. Cobb, however, takes a lot of patience and at least a moderate amount of good back muscle. Takes a long time to build a cobb structure compared to others of similar size. A good vote for building and living in small spaces, no?
Cobb also has extraordinary insulation properties, surpassed only by straw bale, and is 100% fire-proof (except for your furnishings) -- or sealing one's self up inside a modern "tech" structure that doesn't breathe at all. I am partial to breathing, personally.
But, as always, I ultimately come back to living in tents, wagons, and boats. And under the open skies as weather permits.

OK.. Sold on Cobb! Yep now I just need to dig deeper to see about settling and how to incorporate timbers into structures... Hmmmm.. Cobb sauna sounds like a good starting point..
Being from a cold climate, it is ingrained in me to have a structure...I do respect and admire your lifestyle choices.. While not quite as "extreme as you, we actually prefer small over big for many reasons.. We have two grade school boys and they share a room in our 900sq home.. Plenty of room for four people in a generous 900 sq...
According to the net, it looks as if there are some talented cobb builders in the PNW..
Very cool...

Yes, there has been quite a bit of interest in cobb in the PNW ... multiple workshop experience groups, etc. Mostly hippie-dippy types having a great time ... good for them ... they are some knowledgeable folks, too ... seems counter-intuitive that building with dirt becomes popular in a rainy, wet climate ... but the reality is one only need follow the "good boots and hat" rule: stone foundation well above any seep -- and good roof with plenty overhang.
I also grew up in Michigan and Maine, among other places ... and lived in Minnesota after my time in service ... both my late wife and current wife were/are from the Iron Range, Minnesota ... I know about cold driving one indoors
... but if you are coming to California, while you can find real cold in winter, most likely you will be in VERY moderate circumstances and outdoors more than ever before ... hope so.
I hardly know what I would do with even 100 sq. ft. anymore ... if I still had family (I raised four kids, so six of us in the home, in 1800 sq ft) I could see giving each about up to 100 sq. and another 100 or two for the general chaos and extra management.

Plus, so called deforestation is not an issue in North America. Overall, it's a reforestation situation. Yeah, I know ... old growth is scarce ... lots of monocultures .... etc ... etc. But in the grand scheme of things we don't have a lack of timber in North America.

You are right, today's second and tertiary growth forests will insure a plentiful supply of pencils for many years to come.
