Hello,

I am wondering the following about Los Angeles versus San Diego:

1. How do the climates differ?

2. Although, I know that both cities are known as car cities, which city has worst public transportation?

3. How does the business climate differ?

Thanks

1. The climates are VERY similar. The only real difference is San Diego gets 10 inches of rain per year, LA gets 15 inches per year.

The biggest variation in climate in So. Calif. is Inland Valley vs. Coastal. The coast is typically more moderate, less extreme than the inland valleys. LA is characterized by more Inland Valley's (with no ocean breeze) than San Diego. But if you are sitting on the beach in LA and San Diego, the climate is nearly identical.

2. You are correct, both are very car oriented cities. I think LA has the better public transit (both rail and buses).

3. Business climate? What kind of business? I think San Diego's unemployment rate is lower than LA's right now. But LA generally has a deeper and more varied job market.

1. Climates - Both are very similar along the coast. LA extends further inland and gets hotter in the summer. The LA area tends to get a bit more rain than SD in the winter time.

2. Public transportation - LA has more options overall, including several lines of the Metrolink, the subway and light rail. SD just has the trolley (light rail) and the coaster train up the coast. However, as LA is much larger and more spread out, I actually think that the public transportation in SD is better relative to the size of the metro area.

3. LA is very big into entertainment and defense. The truth is, it is such a big area, it has a little bit of everything (including high-tech in Orange County). In SD, biotech rules. Defense is also fairly large and there is a little high tech. The truth is, neither business climate is as favorable as you see in the SF bay area, which is made clear by the unemployment rates.

Could not agree more with roadwarrior. However, I would say that SD, while noticeably drier than LA, is much cooler and more overcast (coastal stratus). This is because most of SD is near the coast, while most of LA is more inland. In the summer, it's not uncommon at all for SD to be about 75 while LA is 95. I've even been to LA when it was 108, and it was 76 when I got to SD.
