Three of my four grandparents are from Arkansas. They aren't inbred, toothless, drunken idiots living in shacks. This was on I-40 and was modern, clean and well landscaped. Not just the restrooms, but the picnic area adjacent to it (with a nice view of the surrounding hills). I-40 through there was actually smooth and pleasant to drive on, which can't always be said of California freeways. I'm a native here, born and raised, but I'm not so blind as to not recognize when something is done better elsewhere.

Isn't "service station" an oxymoron?

I avoid eating too many solids before a long drive, and if I really have to go down that road, I wait till I'm passing by a larger town and can duck into a Target or something. Some of the gas/food/etc centers off of major freeways like the 5 are in pretty good shape, others are absolutely horrifying... thank god I'm a dude

The rest stops aren't too bad. Although when I moved back up here I came up 101.

Although, this brings up an interesting related tangent: are men's restrooms yuckier than women's? And the really tricky part about figgering out the truth on this is finding someone who frequents both ... volunteers to clarify this issue?

My worst experience: Wyoming in January. Hwy 59 somewhere between Gillette and the Montana border, approx 2am. I'm driving my 18-wheeler when I get the urge to go. I pull into a deserted rest area. The "restroom" is unheated and the top course of blocks stop just below the roof line, allowing the bracing cold sub-zero air to bring the men's room to ambient temperature. The toilets were stainless steel prison toilets. Yes, I sat down.
