East Timor didn't leave peacefully. Indonesia set the place on fire, literally as they left.

Same with "Jefferson"--what would be its economic base? Who thinks up this cr@p?

Now secession, that might make a little more sense, if Sac'to could only get its act together. The budget is too hamstrung with laws limiting its use to be viable for running an independent nation.
Ruthforreason...er I mean truth, great points. When I see these rural areas wanting to be independent, it just makes me chuckle. I guess they don't think they need an economic base which clearly demonstrates their need to be silenced.

And for those who think it should be split along the political/voting lines. Nothing makes sense when devided politically. What are you gonna do, divide again later? Political affiliations shift and don't remain in one area the way cultural behaviors do. Besides, wouldn't that create more of the type of polarizing we already have?

Clearly one of the mods hates this idea, they went through and deleted three pages of discussion and left the spam posts...

Splitting California is not the answer. The people in the rural northern areas of the state are mostly unhappy that our state government does not view things the way they do. The Jefferson folks can cry under-representation, but the cold hard truth is simply this; they see themselves as more conservative than the rest of California. They want to hold on to that 19th century rugged individualism, the wild west mentality if you will. They say they want less government, less regulation, but most of the counties in the proposed new state of Jefferson depend mightily on Federal and state money for their citizens to survive. Their proposed financial viability plan is as bare as a bikini clad hottie in Hawaii, but they do make a fair bit of noise.
Perhaps these folks should elect representatives who will actually do their bidding in both Washington and Sacramento; instead, they elect party line idiots, who do nothing but stamp party politics, often at the expense of their constituents. They believe anyone who is a registered Democrat is evil, without even understanding what many Democrats stand for and will fight for. The lack of intelligence, understanding, and the fact that they can be so easily manipulated, does not bode well for the future of this nation. The problem is that this mentality is not isolated to rural northern California, it is prevalent all across America; which is why we see representative being elected to serve the top one half of a percent. We have an electorate that has been fooled into thinking that they can somehow become the next billionaire if they simply buy into the GOP mantra of today. Sorry folks, you are pissing into one big fan, being laughed at behind your back, and the wealthy are thanking you for your ignorance as they head to the bank.
