The 10 Worst Cities for Finding a Job - Yahoo! Finance

I'm surprised to see so many CA cities in the "top list". Not sure of its accuracy though as I'd bet places like El Centro top these numbers. Didn't notice the population parameters for this study, so maybe El Centro is too small potatoes.

Default top 6 are in Central Valley

I'm not. 6 of the top 7 are in the Central Valley...not exactly centers of commerce....and even many of the illegals & farm laborers have left. The one job however that is always available even in these cities are hospital nursing jobs, not so much for new grads, but for experienced nurses.

1. Merced
2. Fresno
3. Modesto
4. Stockton
5. Visalia-Porterville
6. Atlantic City-Hammonton, N.J
7. Bakersfield-Delano

Just double the figures to get accurate and actual unemployment percentages.

This is normal for the Valley. It always does worse than the rest of the state. There's no industry besides ag and government. One thing to consider is that ag employment is probably skewing the statistics upwards because it is seasonal employment. Absent some massive capital infusion, the Valley's prospects are not very bright.

What I find odd about the article is the pairing of several cities together as one. Fresno is certainly a large city with a population of at least 400,000 the last time I checked.

I'm not sure why Bakersfield is paired with Delano, which is mostly an agricultural town that is 30 miles north from here and accounts for having a far worse unemployment rate than Bakersfield.

And Merced? Not sure why they are considered in the ranking since the criteria in the report requires that the city have a population of 200,000 or more. Merced's population is 78,958 according to the 2010 Census.

I think this might answer your question.

Other than a few DotBomb Release 2.0 places, and, government greased "Green Tech" boondoggles, employment prospects in CA are poor. I'd reckon the Top (Bottom?) 20 list would include a few of the more "sexy" locations, above and beyond the Merceds of the world.

I wondered that too.

On the map it appears that Stockton-Modesto-Merced are one statistical area, but they are on the list separately. Am I not reading the map right?

More or less confirming what we already know in the article. The central valley is the armpit of cali. Hell its even shaped/smells like one to.
