My old man never understood how kids worked. He would pass up those stands, we never stopped. Us kids would have stopped at everyone.

I find 99 much more interesting to travel than 5, lots of stuff to see, tractor lots, truck lots, odd little towns.

Yes, but before 5 was built I saw all those little towns, stoplight by stoplight, with no AC in the car in the summer!
Well my Dad stopped at almost everyone of those stands, or so it seemed.
He loved that orange drink!
As a kid, it seemed like to took forever to get anywhere compared to driving the rapid roads that we have today.

I remember well the no AC. My dad had a theory that inside of the car was cooler if the windows were rolled up. And he smoked and listened to baseball games on the radio.
To this day, if I hear a ball game on the radio, I start coughing.....

We may be related. Did he listen to the SF Giants and the SF 49ers?

That was them!
And it sure tasted good when driving down 99 in 100° temps before cars had AC.
I don't know how many there were, but they were on the road very often or so it seems.

I remember those lovely Summer trips up 99 in the 1959 Ford station wagon with no AC, parents up front smoking like chimneys, kids in the back wanting it to be over. "Are we there yet?" "Daddy I have to pee."

My parents were so Depression era cheap, we never stopped for food or cold drinks. I remember gazing longingly at the orange stands or the occasional A&W.

At least the relatives we were visiting in Bakersfield and Fresno had house AC, and they knew how to use it.

That orange is now owned by the City of Chowchilla. As of about a year ago or so it was in storage in the city yard awaiting private/public funds to restore and reopen it in Chowchilla.

That is actually a return home. If I remember the history correct from its historical nomination that particular orange originally was located at the old 99 and Robertson Blvd. intersection in Chowchilla. As part of work on 99 in the 1950s, Caltrans relocated that orange to northbound 99 in Fairmead for the owner.

I drive that stretch of 99 regularly. Most of it is pretty flat and straight with only a few sweeping curves. And most of the time, it's full speed ahead. The only part I'm not a fan of is the Delano-Goshen section, which is only 2 lanes instead of 3 in each direction. That section-approximately 40 miles in length is notorious for ornery big rig trucks creating little logjams because the one driving at 57 just HAS to pass the one doing 56. They can and will literally cut you off without warning and the "pass" can take a few miles to complete because of the absurdly small speed differential between the two rigs. Meanwhile a backlog of anywhere from several to several dozen cars have backed up behind you. I suspect that the truckers do this on purpose.

And be careful on the flyover curve at Famoso. A lot of people misjudge the angle of the bank and I can't tell you how many cars and trucks have overran it, flipped over, or smashed into the guardrails. It only seems to be at that one spot.

Rest of the freeway is fine.
