I've got a few questions for someone familiar with Plumas National Forest. I'm looking at going up there sometime for a couple days of either backpacking or car camping.

- What are current conditions like? Is there much snow this year? Whats' the snowline sitting at?

- What are daytime and nighttime temperatures in February? May?

- What are trail conditions like in the spring? Very muddy?

Basically what could be considered the first "reasonable" month to go hiking/camping?

Also if anyone can recommend a nice 10-15 mile loop ...

I found this helpful: http://www.fs.usda.gov/main/plumas/maps-pubs#forestmaps There is also some trail information on the same page.

Quincy is about 3500 feet in elevation and probably doesn't have much (if any) snow at this point. In terms of temps, I'd use Quincy as starting point to find out the averages right here on C-D.

Quincy Weather Forecast and Conditions

As for car camping, I've been to Snake Lake a couple of times. It's about 5 miles out of Quincy and easy to get to. The lake surface is full of lilly pads. SNAKE LAKE CAMPGROUND (first item).

Bucks Lake Area for beginners. May or June depending on the weather, elevation, snow pack, your experience.

I prefer the Jackson Valley Meadow Reservoir Recreation area in The Tahoe National Forest myself. Especially the area around Bowman lake.

Jackson Meadow. The best back packing areas nearby are, behind Bucks Lake on the Plumas, and Grouse Ridge area on the Tahoe.

Do you have trail names/numbers?
