I admit that part of the post wasn't written clearly. I have nothing against the country, I'm just not a very rural kind of person. We have lived in 2 places that were fairly rural and we didn't seem to think it fit our lifestyles very well.
But the saying is true: Different strokes for different folks!

The country is beautiful, just not for the way we live our lives...
IMO it is not a country thing, it exists in cities too... It is a percentage of population.. Being a rural person my whole life and being very very uncomfortable in cities, I am of the mindset that since it is a percentage of the population thing... There has to be way way more sick puppies in cities than in remote areas....Simple logistics less people=less problems....

Matter of fact we have bones and stuff hanging on our gate to keep out folks who do not know us... Scare off the riff/Raff...

Magic.....Boo!................Yep stay away!

You would not approve of all nature respecting activities and swimming out of the sauna naked, soaking up mother nature stuff anyway....

Yup a few deer bones and sculls, along with a few other Ojibwa inspired tricks, really screens the mindset of folks coming in on the long dead end... The ones that feel uncomfortable turn around before getting to the house... This way we do not need to have those filled with a kind of energy/mindset we do not like on our land uninvited, breaking our protective bubble...

A highly effective invisible fence, keeps out those that do not "understand it".

First off, why do you think the claim that California is so uniquely desirable is a certainty? What makes you so sure that many folks couldn't find as much, or more, happiness and contentment in other much less expensive places? Do you not realize that many folks absolutely love places near the Great Lakes, or some of the river cities in the Midwest, or places along the East or Gulf Coastlines?

You are only expressing your own point of view.

Millions of folks, likely 10's of millions of folks, would completely disagree with you.

I think it has four wheels.

The Tax is almost 10% and is virtually on everything including services. The only thing that is not taxed is prescriptions. Housing is cheaper, property taxes are cheaper. There is no high vehicle registration cost nor yearly vehicle property tax. There is no income tax. So something has to give. I don't see how the state funds its schools and infrastructure etc. with such limited revenue. For a lower income person that high an income tax must really hurt. They must have to live very frugally. Or many must be on food stamps. Since even the grocery bill is taxed. It just seems like a very limited way to fund a state. Plus the Sales tax can only go up and up as more money is needed. So how does the state manage? Or is Tenn basically a poor state.

Good luck in Calif. I hope things will be good for you there.
(1) Tennessee and California are like traffic ticket bros. Two peas in a pod. What ever you want to call them. Cops patrol the highways very heavily in both states, although I'll give Tennessee the edge on actually being bigger jerks (based on stories and family members' experiences). Naturally, a big revenue enhancer for either state.

(2) Tennessee can have a high sales tax because it absolutely makes friggin' sense! Have you been to Memphis, Nashville, Chattanooga, or the Smokies? Memphis has Beale Street, Nashville has the country music history and the Ryman, Chattanooga has a massive aquarium, and the Smokies are like the Jesus Christos Bible-thumpin' gaudy country hick Vegas of the east, but with no dern tootin' gamblin'. (I only like the Great Smoky Mountain National Park, but the rest of the region is lame.) People drive from as far as Savannah, Detroit, St. Louis, and Raleigh just to spend a weekend at any one of the said locations. Nashville is also a major convention city.

Lastly, quite a few Californians seem to be moving to Nashville. Just skim the Nashville board.

My wife is an Australian citizen with a flat that she rents out since we are living here. When it gets to the point that we can no longer tolerate, we will blow this state, and this country.....and move to Melbourne for good.

I personally have had enough of California. The lustre hasn't yet worn off for my wife, as she has only been here for a couple of years.

I will say this though....after living in Iowa for a couple of years in the mid 2000's, California is a paradise.
