Jaijai, it is shocking and dis-heartening! Before living in the city (Nyskayuna, where I am now), I lived in my own home a few minutes from Sacandaga Lake in a house surrounded by pines with a few decks, a yard for my garden, and tons of privacy. I miss it and know I couldn't rent or share a house-only with my two cats :-) I'm thinking now I might have to give up on CA :-(

If you are willing to give up the dream of a house, you can get a condo for $150K or less in a beach town in Oceanside, San Diego County, CA.

Check these listings on Redfin.com:
http://www.redfin.com/homes-for-sale#!market=socal&max_price=150000&region_id=1375 3&region_type=6&v=7

The downside is that parts of Oceanside can be sort of scruffy and gang-plagued. Youíll have to do your research to separate the wheat from the chaff if you are interested in getting a place there.
