Me and my business partner (who happens to be my closest friend) want to move out to California this summer from NY. We own a successful Internet based business and we plan on working out of our apartment/house. We are looking for a city that is young and fun (we are 24 years old). We want to be able to go out at night and meet a lot of young people and make friends. We think LA or San Diego is our best bet. Anyone have any advice for which is the better place to be? Also, if you can let me know specific locations in those cities to target (such as West Hollywood or Pacific Beach, etc.). Any help or feedback would be much appreciated. Thanks!

This has been covered many times but simply put LA is the more happening/diverse/exciting while SD is the cleaner/more relaxed/less hectic city. 3.2 million people in SD county and close to 10 million in LA county (not including surrounding counties). As you may realize, with a bigger population you have better options for dining, arts, and overall energy. Of course, that also comes with higher cost of living, pollution, traffic, etc.

I would visit both, they are only about ~110 miles apart and see what is more fitting as that's what counts in the end. PB and West Hollywood are love/hate areas from person to person and definitely different vibes. You can always hop to either city for weekend jaunts and exploring.

If you can work out of your home and quality of life is important then San Diego is the easy choice.

Kudos to wanting to bring some tech presence to Southern California, but if you want to be surrounded by tech nerds and be in proximity to tech cash, the Bay Area is really going crazy with new tech money right now. Lots of new companies opening up especially in San Francisco. It's probably a bubble, but people there are really into the whole techie schmooze thing so it might be better if you want to make contacts. But certainly if you want to get away from that (and get nicer weather) then SoCal might be the better choice.
