Default monterey for non-drivers

Hello,
I'm thinking about moving to Monterey from Ohio. I've been offered a job at the Naval Postgraduate School. I do not drive so I will commute by bike or bus. I would prefer biking, I don't know what public transportation is like in Monterey but here in Ohio it is dirty, inconvenient and poorly managed.
I would appreciate any input on where to live (I will be renting, of course) so that I can be near work and or shopping. Are there any good organic groceries or healthfood stores besides Wholefoods?

There is a Trader Joe's in Pacific Grove.
The old train tracks thru Monterey were turned into a bike path/jogging trail. Very well kept. I used to ride up to the Cost Co on the trail from Carmel.
