For myself, DD708, AD16 ASW, and no one other than the UDT boys ever discussed shoes.

Work often required interaction between the two groups, although close friendships were not often formed. The engineers, the snipes, were still another group that usually stuck pretty much together. On a destroyer things were different, after a few months aboard you knew almost every man on the ship, and of course there were no airdales. Even though I was in Operations Dept. my best friend at one time was an IC Electrician, a so called snipe.

Well, .high, you were Weapons Division, right? That along with Deck Div. and Supply, plus the engine snipes, are the main Bluewater Navy. You regular Navy sailors didn't have to pay attention to the "minorities" Blackshoe here probably took more note because he was carrier ship's company at one point.

As for my claim that airdales were targeted, yeah, Blackshoe, we really were. Seriously. Your statement really more than hints at the truth of it when you say "Work often required interaction between the two groups, although close friendships were not often formed." Understatement to which there were many exceptions. I made some real friendships with a group of snipes in #2 boiler and used to go hang down there a fair bit. Other stories could go on at terrible length -- emphasis on "terrible" so I'll drop it now and go back to bear and cougar -- both of which I find a damn lot more interesting than bluewater sailors . (Man am I glad I got to aircrew and get off the damn boat ... but, jokes aside, you destroyer sailors pulled real duty ... that's a rough ride ... I'll stick with barrel rolls and hanging on at open chopper doors during RESCAPs!)

yeah, I guess I alone was in the real Navy! Black shoes and all. When folks ask me what being on a destroyer was like, I tell the to watch "the Perfect Storm" We were homeported in Boston and spent a great deal of time in the North Atlantic in winter.
I learned a new definition of miserable. Out on the foredeck in a winter storm chipping ice by hand off the super structure so we would not add topside weight and turn turtle.

Well, I will chime in..... I may pack a weapon, often deep in the pack unloaded... Just for unknown situations which may arise.... (generally human related situations, not animal related.)

Yes, I come from a "gun" culture... Yes, I am embarrassed over the vast majority of weekend warriors that call themselves outdoors people... Yes, I am offended by those that think they need to kill any wild animal they see, because they were wrongly influenced by dark and fearful/little red riding hood attitude spawned in Europe.

So I would say I fall in some where in between Highnlite, Alexxis, and Angry Tax Payer, on this subject.

----
Our Black Bears came out of hibernation.... We spotted a sow with two cubs near the house... What do we do? Remind the kids one does not want to get between a sow and cubs... Best thing to do is let them know you are around... Make some sound, give them a chance to regroup... Also stop feeding the birds and start keeping the garbage in the garage...They will head back out into the deeper woods soon enough...

"Mmmmmm, chow," ~ Homer Simpson.
"Stupid? ... Chow isn't stupid! And it wouldn't be right if any was left!"

Well, I didn't "left" my heart in C Rats. I'd rather eat kimchi.
