I thought this was interesting: Moderator cut: link removed, linking to competitor sites is not allowedCalifornia ranks #2 in average household size at 2.93 persons per household.

The state ranks #15 in birthrate, which also on the healthy side, but the large average household size may be due as much to COL and dense urban environs as it is to birthrate.

I think this might be a loose interpretation of what defines a household. Is that five guys/gals sharing an apartment, two+ families, extended families, inlaws/outlaws, etc... all living under the same roof just to save a buck?

I think household size is defined simply as the number of people living under the same roof. It's not the same as family size, as the City-Data stats make clear. That's why a small university town will have a higher-than-average household size and a smaller-than-average family size.

Those numbers are off... I don't think they counted extra 6 not-on-the-lease roommates for some SF or LA apartments...well in LA it can get to 20.

It's a combination of lots of bambinos in certain places, and lots of roomies in certain other places.
