Both are very suburban with lots of tract houses and no real downtown. Fremont tends to have a large concentration of Afghans and East Indians, whereas Irvine has a large concentration of Asians (due to the university). Being part of OC, Irvine tends to be more conservative, whereas Fremont is more liberal, as it is in the Bay Area. Both cities have very good schools, although with Fremont, you need to know where to live, as some areas are not quite as nice.

Personally, I wouldn't live in either city, due to the lack of character. I'd prefer one of the Bay Area peninsula cities (or even Pleasanton) to Fremont, due to the character of the cities and nice downtowns. I'd prefer either Newport or Huntington Beach cities to Irvine.

I largely agree with roadwarrior. A lot of those "best places to live" lists frequently contain cities that are, for the most part, any town USA. Lack of anything defining and being very neutral. Both Fremont and Irvine fit that definition. Within Orange County, Huntington Beach is my favorite. I'm a native of Alameda County so my opinion about it will obviously be bias. I too moved out of San Diego. If you're going to be there for a while longer, perhaps I would suggest getting out of the city itself while remaining in the metro area. I personally liked Chula Vista when I lived there. Encinitas also seems like a nice town although I've never lived there. If you come to Alameda County, check out Alameda and Berkeley. Also within the east bay you could look into El Cerrito just across the county line in Contra Costa County.

thx for the replies

(shouldnt of made this thread late night)

forgot to mention a few things...im on a tight budget. i wanna move out of san diego so i can get things going with my life, so dont need a perfect place. just somewhere i can get a min wage job, and save up money for awhile. at the same time going to college part time, eventually full time.

need a place where schools, economy, and people aren't terrible. those are the 3 most important things to me. doesnt have to be like san diego. something decent at the very least. dont need a variety of things to do, or an active lifestyle, etc. would be nice, but not a necessity.

right now im just getting info on places that i would consider moving too. havent done a whole lot of research, not thinking too much, just brainstorming. i definitely wanna stay in california, but that prolly wont happen.

i know some websites that say "best places to live" etc etc arent the best things to look at. i've seen a bunch of those for awhile btw.

hope i didnt forget to mention anything else

Both are very nice places to live. Weather is also very different. Fremont is colder where as Irvine can be warmer. Both have June Gloom from overcast. Irvine is also closer to Disneyland in Anaheim and close to Los Angeles. Where as Fremont is close to San Francisco.

Summertime temperatures are actually quite similar in both cities. Fremont is far enough inland to get less of the June gloom and it may actually get a bit warmer than Irvine during the day. Nights tend to be cooler, in the 50s, as opposed to Irvine being in the 60s. Winter temps tend to be a bit cooler in Fremont (both daytime highs and nighttime lows) with a little more rain.

Well get a job first and then you can figure it out. A minimum wage job won't let you live very well if you're living in an expensive suburb in the Bay Area or Orange County which are both very expensive, like San Diego, and you'd have to drive everywhere--so you sure wouldn't be saving money. If you got a tech job in Silicon Valley then Fremont might be a good choice because it's cheaper than Silicon Valley towns, but it's still expensive. I'd try and get a job somewhere like Berkeley, Oakland or San Francisco and live with roommates in Oakland or Berkeley where you can live for about $500-600 a month--pretty cheap by Bay Area standards but you'll need to be making about $14 an hour or so to get by--but you'd be able to live without a car. Orange County has a lot of jobs but it's still really expensive. I live in Long Beach right now which is pretty cheap, but it's not really close to many job areas, but it's within driving distance of Orange County or you can hop on the blue line to downtown LA.

Honestly I'd just focus on your education and try to do it as cheaply as possible, and just look for work wherever you go to school. Try and do something that will be marketable, like computer science or mechanical engineering. Just my 2 cents.

i definitely intend to move with other people, so i wont be paying rent by myself. i got my own car so transportation isnt a problem.

not gonna put much thought into college until i work for at least one year, unless i somehow can afford it before i get a job, which is a pipe dream. there's a lotta things i want and need to do before i go to college, and at least half of those thigns require money. some i had to give up on cuz too much time has past, still a lot to do tho

This isn't entirely accurate. Fremont is in the Bay Area but it isn't exactly cold. In fact according to weather.com, Fremont averages slightly warmer than Irvine:

Monthly Averages for Fremont, CA (94538) - weather.com

Monthly Averages for Irvine, CA (92697) - weather.com

I'm a little surprised by that. I'd say both places are mild to warm, and they both get about the same amount of rain (although Fremont gets somewhat more rainy days, but with less rain per day -- still way below most places in America). But Irvine often seems scorching and humid to be in the summer. It may depend on what part of Irvine. Closer to the west side and the hills separating it from the ocean may be cooler than where the office buildings are. But either place is gonna have pretty awesome weather, not too different from SD in any case.

Still, if I were working minimum wage, I'd stay in SD. The min wage is the same, and housing is cheaper than OC or Fremont.
