Yeah, there is a price to being safe from street crime. I lived in Singapore for 6 months. It is remarkably safe from a street crime perspective. And too many laws by our standards, but the citizens of Singapore, as near as I could tell, are just fine with the situation.

When I lived there, there were pretty severe penalties for, among other things:
  • failing to flush a public toilet when you're done
  • spitting on the sidewalk in public
  • hailing a cab from anywhere other than a corner
  • spitting out chewing gum (actually, there is no chewing gum for sale in Singapore - at least not when I was there)
  • etc

a) they are undoubtedly indoctrinated to feel the way they do
b) it is illegal to feel otherwise under penalty of death

I have seen a bunch of North Koreans on the TV the last few days. They all seemed happy, and there was no litter!
