Post Move to Turlock,CA

I got a job offer at Turlock in the central valley. Anybody is familiar with that small town? How is the weather? (I know summer is hot, how is the winter?) I lived in Texas for 5years so far. So hot summer is not that bad to me. Which area is the so nice area to live in the town? I visited the town for one day. And I saw some big shopping store even which is very nice and convenient for living. I have a 3 and half old boy. Which daycare is good for that age kid?
Any comment will be appreciated.

Turlock today is a far cry from just a few years ago.

The city now has destination shopping with Monte Vista Crossings. Shopping prior to Monte Vista Crossing meant leaving town... now the citizens of Turlock have a lot of local choices... Including hotels.

The Holiday Inn Express is consistently rated in the top 5% nationwide. Turlock also boasts a University and is the gateway to Yosemite.

The weather is often cold in the winter and can be hot in the summer, as is most of the central valley. Home prices offer a lot of variety and are reasonable by California standards.

I would not recommend Turlock for night life... for that, your nearest place would be the SF Bay Area.

Default Move to Turlock

Thank you for your comment. I did see a big shopping area just neaby the highway. Unfortunately, I do not see the Walmart supercenter Actually the safety of the town is my big concern. Is it safer than Modesto? Which part of the town is good for the living? the area close to the monte vista crossings?

The plans for Walmart were shut-down by the city... Walmart had bought the land and appealed the decision... but as of yet... no Walmart.

And now Turlock joins the other 25 towns that claim to be a "gateway to Yosemite".

For my money any community claiming to be a gateway to Yosemite ought to at least be on one of the numbered highways that run into the park.

Heck my town should be called the gateway to Yosemite. It's only 15 minutes away from Highway 49 which connects to Highway 120 and 140 which run through the Park.

It's a 2 hour drive to the valley from here though.

No doubt the Park has many gateways...

Here is one of the Hotel Ads...Turlock Inn, a Magnuson Hotels affiliate, is the gateway to Yosemite National Park

or maybe it is the city itself... the Turlock City Planning commission meets in the City of Turlock Yosemite Room...

or the Turlock Branch of the Yosemite Farm Credit Association

and so the list goes on...

Default Walmart down but not out?

My info is only second hand, it is my understanding the unions decided to make Turlock a test case. My neighbor works for the Retail Food Clerks in the Bay Area and she mentioned in passing that her union was allocating resources to stop Walmart in Turlock.

It was definitely a hot topic last year and the local newspaper even did polling in addition to publishing many stories about it.

The Store was to be situated just south of Monte Vista Crossings adjacent to the new regional shopping... i.e. Home Depot, Lowes, Safeway, Target and about 60 other businesses.

The Safeway was the first in the state to sell gasoline and the community lobbied In and Out Burger to build a restaurant there. One of the other restaurants said the Turlock location was the best opening in their chains history...

Turlock has had tremendous growth over the last few years...

Turlock resident here! Leaving soon! getting WAY too crowded.. we live very close to Monte Vista Crossings... my kids were born and raised here.. youngest (22) is moving with us to WA...and oldest and spouse will leave as soon as he is done with school... been in T-Town since the fall of 81.... it's just not the 'small town' atmosphere anymore... hubby said as soon as it loses that feel we are GONE...

The problem now is selling our home not a good time to sell.
