I'm absolutely delighted to learn that the "Sacred Stones" building project at New Clairvaux will be used as a church and open to the public, rather than a Chapter House for the exclusive use of the monks. Deo gratias.

"The monks at New Clairvaux Abbey have changed the plan for their Sacred Stones project. The building that is being constructed with medieval stones will be used as a church instead of a chapter house, they've decided.

One reason for changing the plan is to have the building used by the public.

Presently, members of the public may participate in the abbey's regular church services, where the monks pray and chant each day. That will continue to be the case when the Sacred Stones church is complete, said Jerry Olenyn, director of development for the Sacred Stones project.

Abbot Paul Mark Schwan, the monastery's leader, was asked in an email about the change in plans.

'Given the time, energy and cost of restoring the chapter house, it is worthy of being a church, where monks are called seven times daily to prayer and where they spend much time daily,' he responded. 'Plus, as a church it will be well used by all who come.'"

I'll give them my full support (by drinking their Sierra Nevada Ovila collection).

This will be a HUGE improvement over the existing, ugly, modernist church on the property. And a phenomenal setting for the Latin Mass if they so choose.

Heaven forbid anyone post something that doesn't interest Fontucky, who represents all Californians.

The architecture is beautiful....however, is this really out in the middle of a small farming community? How many of the general public is likely to go visit on a sunday? or is this more of a destination for conferences-type of place?

a classic Baroque Cathedral, complete with galvanized steel and cinder block. What will they think of next?

I would imagine that California building codes circa 2012 have something to do with it ....

Vina is situated about halfway between Chico and Red Bluff a mile off of State Hwy 99. I would guess that there's a Catholic population base of maybe 50,000 within a 45 minute commute that might worship there on Sunday now and then. If it's going to be the monastery church, the monks will be using it for their daily mass and offices (matins, lauds, prime, sext, terce, vespers, compline) seven times every day, so visitors to the winery might also be enticed to join them.
