Will we ever get it back? I don't think so. There is no political will to make the necessary changes. Neither in Sacramento among the politicians nor in the big cities among the voters. The voters living outside the cities do want change but their voice means nothing. So CA will languish.

I sometimes wish the crisis would hit. Let CA go bankrupt. Let the pain begin in earnest. Maybe the people will learn that these failed policies won't work. You've got to encourage economic growth not tax it or regulate it out of existence. Let the citizens of CA suffer enough that they would open their eyes.

But who am I kidding? If severe hard times came to CA and bread lines returned would that open peoples' eyes? Doubtful. The people would look even more to government to solve the "problem". And those who got us into this mess would be in charge of getting us out. As I look to the future I think we are really screwed.

Hmmmm ... ... Well, I don't drive California politics ... I drive a van.
But I still agree with Representative Fontucky on this issue.

The O.C. viewpoint:
Population falling = educated whites moving out.
Population growing = illegal browns moving in.

The middle class (read - "white") exodus the OC Register is writing about started with George Bush Sr. and then Clinton with the closing of numerous military bases throughout the state. They were a big draw for out-of-state people settling here, not to mention a source of good paying civilian jobs. Add to that decreased defense spending and consolidation of or exodus of aerospace companies and jobs from SoCal and you set the stage for those "four million more leaving for other states than moving in" they claim. It may have been temporarily masked by the housing boom, but really, the only innovative growth sector of the last 20 years has been South Bay tech.

Basically, we haven't learned to deal with the loss of military based jobs. What Ronald Reagan did for the state with the boom in defense spending in the 1980s wasn't sustainable.

Looking at the demographic trends and projections, that sounds about right.
