I would say Climate is the biggest differentiator between the two!

Any way.. They are both on my short list of great places...

Actually the crime in both towns, and most towns in SLO County (except maybe Paso and SLO) are far below US average. And SLO city is darn close to average. So you're right, it's climate.

As a recent transplant to Paso, I just wanted to say that I haven't noticed the town to be lacking a community vibe. It also doesn't seem all that spread out to me. There's nothing in SLO Co. that even remotely resembles the urban sprawl we left behind in Virginia.

How about the west side up in the hills? Still so hot? or are you getting a cooling effect through the Templeton gap?

I have a question how is the wind on the west side of Templeton up in the hills? Highnlight, how about up above Arroyo Grande where you are at...

I have things sorta narrowed down to west in the hills towards the coast by Templeton or Atascadero. Or East of up over Arroyo Grande.

Basically anywhere in and up from the coast would be something we consider. Those Avocado zones east of Morro to Cambria seems to be a great climate.

If you bring up google maps look at the aerials of Arroyo Grande and Nipomo Mesa, fly low over the area, you will see lots of acreage parcels, 1 to 5 to 10 to 20 acres, some are fancy developments some are relatively inexpensive.

As for wind? Depends.. at our place we don't have quite enough wind to run a wind gen efficiently. Some afternoons we will get a cooling breeze off the ocean, and of course, in the fall we can get the off shore, strong, hot Santa Ana's.. fire winds

After living in Truckee with its harsh weather, my kids refer to SLO County south of Cuesta Grade as "The Shire" nothing bad happens, the weather is moderate, always, never cold never hot.

The last few days there has been a 30 degree temperature difference between the afternoon highs in South County and North County, 60's here, 90's in the north.

Often, when it is hot in the interior, North County and Central Valley, there are Thunderstorms in the Sierra and fog on the coast. When planning a tri into the Sierra, if it is foggy before I leave, I anticipate extra heat in the valley and T storms in the afternoon at camp.

I think it can be said that people's impressions are completely relative, and usually relative to where they came from. For someone who has lived in SLO County for decades, and comparing it to other cities in the area, then Paso is more spread out, and less of a community feel than the towns around it. Can't speak to Virginia and its urban sprawl, but I imagine if you came from a place like that.. and having never lived in any of the other Central Coast cities, then it would probably seem that way. I was talking about in comparison to the other cities, which I've lived in.

Glad that Paso is working out for you, it's a nice town, and sounds like an improvement from where you've lived in the past. Without knowing where folks have been living in the past, I can only comment on the comparison from town to town in the area the OP was asking about.

Hi, I just saw your current location on your info. You would love the lack of humidity on the Central Coast! The heat on the Westsides of Templeton and Atascadero are definitely still hot in the summer, but the nights are beautiful and rarely humid. You do get some ocean cooling in those areas at night, and the mornings are amazing in the summer. When I've lived in the North County area (North of the Cuesta Grade,) I've always preferred the West side of things... can be a bit cooler (maybe a degree or two,) but it always is the first too cool off. It's such a different experience than the Midwest or Upper Midwest... much more pleasant.

East of Arroyo Grande is also warmer than AG proper, but it would be a bit cooler than the North County (even the Westside of North County.) I think Arroyo Grande proper has the greatest weather in the world, often 72 degrees and sunny. The East side of AG is going to be closer to 80 sometimes, while it might be 96 on those days in Templeton. The Avocado belt, on the 41 from Morro Bay to Atascadero, and the 46 from Cambria to Paso, starts out with a bit of a marine influence, but as you hit the summit, you are getting the North County heat.

It's all pretty wonderful, and really depends on your tastes for weather, and how much property you're seeking, etc.

Templeton School District is the best in the county. The API score for the high school is more than any of the other high schools. Templeton High School is smaller, so that helps. Templeton high is a CA Distinguished School and has the Blue Ribbon Award many times in the past. Templeton offers almost all the extracurricular activities at a larger school except wrestling. Swimming and everything else is there. Templeton housing prices are about the same in Arroyo Grande. It is warmer in Templeton. A 4 bedroom, 2 bath in Templeton will cost you around $420,000.

Id say 3 months of the year have warm spells, but thats about it.
