Brain drain: even college students are fleeing California (Los Angeles: home, schools)

One wonders who will be left in ten years ...

More students than ever leave California for college

"Boise State saw its freshmen enrollment from California rise tenfold during the last decade. Arizona State doubled its enrollment of freshmen from California. The University of Oregon has quadrupled it, with freshman enrollment from California growing from 280 in 2000 to 1,100 in 2010.

'We are thrilled with the students we get out of California,' said Roger Thompson, vice provost at the University of Oregon. 'We've seen remarkable growth, predominantly out of Northern California...'"

More kids from California may be attending out-of-state colleges, however based upon the level of students applying to California state supported colleges, I'm not too concerned that we won't have sufficient interest for the future.

After all, how many of those kids attending places like Arizona State or University of Oregon did so because they weren't accepted by the local college of their choice?

CA schools are crowded and kids like going somewhere new. This isn't anything.

I seriously doubt that many of these students were not accepted in California. It's darned near impossible for a college-bound student not to be accepted in the CSU system.

It's much more than that. Some of these students are paying out-of-state tuition. That means they're on the serious side, the cream of the crop. And students who leave the state for college are always less likely to return.

OK, we have had numerous threads talking about people "fleeing" California (gotta love the use of a buzz word here). Even Mexican immigration has come to a halt if not reversed. Yet the state doesn't seem to be losing too many of it's what 37 million people? If people are leaving "in droves" (another buzz phrased used), then what gives?

It's not rocket science. CA's in-migration is slowing, out-migration is accelerating, and birthrates are declining. Population growth is screeching to a halt and, if these trends continue, will soon begin to reverse.

Much ado about nothing. We're getting more out-of-state students as well.

Interesting article. But it's missing some important data. How do foreign vs. out-of-state admissions break down? Hugely important question. And how do the numbers compare with the much larger CSU system?

In this economy, not only will the foreign students be returning to their countries, but out-of-state students will likely return to their respective home states. This is not a win for California.
