My husband just started working at Google in Mountain View. We are new to the area and want to settle in a town with a charming downtown area and lots of community spirit and interesting things to do locally. We like to read and discuss books, listen to live music, ride bicycles, etc. For all those reasons we really like Los Gatos, but are concerned about the commute. Is there another community in the area that stands out for friendly living? Thanks for your help.

Have you looked at downtown Mountain View? The commute would be much easier - many people do it by bicycle - and it may also be a better fit for book discussion (Books Inc in MV vs. what, Borders in LG?) and live music. It's not cheap but neither is Los Gatos.

I'd also recommend Mountain View. I lived there for 12 years and plan to move back there. (I'm in North Carolina now.) MV is a great place to live and cheaper than some nearby cities like Palo Alto and Los Altos.

I also like Redwood City for the same reason.
