For those not familiar with Tom Lehrer's brilliant version of the Boy Scout Marching Song:

Be prepared! that's the boy scout's marching song,
Be prepared! as through life you march along.
Be prepared to hold your liquor pretty well,
Don't write naughty words on walls if you can't spell.

Be prepared! to hide that pack of cigarettes,
Don't make book if you cannot cover bets.
Keep those reefers hidden where you're sure
That they will not be found
And be careful not to smoke them
When the scoutmaster's around
For he only will insist that it be shared.
Be prepared!

Be prepared! that's the boy scouts' solemn creed,
Be prepared! and be clean in word and deed.
Don't solicit for your sister, that's not nice,
Unless you get a good percentage of her price.

Be prepared! and be careful not to do
Your good deeds when there's no one watching you.
If you're looking for adventure of a
New and different kind,
And you come across a girl scout who is
Similarly inclined,
Don't be nervous, don't be flustered, don't be scared.
Be prepared!

I remember getting stuck with clean-up duty at the camporee (what a dumb name) aboard Camp Pendleton when I was in 6th grade. What I was detailed to clean up was the alcoholic vomit of one of the senior boys (Tito Sanchez) who, along with a group of older boys from other troops, had gone on a drinking binge the night before. He chundered all over inside his tent and all over his bag.

In MY world, the drunken rule breaker would have cleaned up his own bodily contents.

I quit soon after. Even as a dumb kid I realized what tyranny was.

And yet you went on to join ?what? after high school?
Speaking of tyranny and drunken chundering ...

You mean earning Merit Badges wasn't payment enough?
Notice what they called pay, and Ma Deuce wore the shine off the nickel in just a hitch though, huh ... Me too.

Confession time: the scouts threw me out before I had a chance to quit ... Military wasn't so fussy about my behavior quite so quick.

Speaking of Tom Lehrer, since the Boy Scouts discouraged Poisonong Pigeons in the Park I felt I had no choice but to avail myself of the challenge to test the claim that It Makes a Fellow Proud to be a Soldier.

Chief, you are one of the few here who are *cough* er, ah mature enough to know of and appreciate Tom Lehrer's finer points ... Among others, he championed the kind of equality that we can only hope the Boy Scouts can rise to. He expressed similar in a statement he made about the Army, as follows:
" the usual jokes about the army aside, one of the many fine things one has to admit is the way that the army has carried the American democratic ideal to its logical conclusion in the sense that not only do they prohibit discrimination on the grounds of race, creed, and color, but also on the grounds of ability." -- Tom Lehrer.

He was one of my father's favorites and I knew the words to most of his songs - not including The Elements - by the age of six or seven. Good memories!
