Jeez, tough crowd!

To the OP, your post is waaaaay too vague and shows you have done almost no research about the state of California. CA has more people than the entire country of Canada. You really need to narrow down what you're looking for and give better search criteria for better answers. CA is much too big for us to give any decent answers based on your original post.

Sacramento itself isn't such a bad city at all. Look into it.

Other places closest to the strongest job markets that are safe, thriving, clean, and have active downtowns and/or are close to many great amenities: the SF Peninsula (basically defined as Daly City to Sunnyvale), San Jose, Fremont, Oakland (minus the safety in some areas), Berkeley, Santa Rosa, Healdsburg, Napa, Pasadena, Glendale, Burbank, Ventura, Oxnard, Newport Beach, Riverside (no joke), Carlsbad. Those are the ones that immediately come to mind.

L.A. is a city that most people either pretty much love or hate.
