Folks, thanks for the info on ethnic enclaves in California. That's a related topic and an interesting one. I'm familiar with most of them. However, these enclaves generally represent large minorities in their respective cities, which is not what I was getting at. A town or city with an historic ethno-cultural majority is an entirely different animal.

Does black count? I would guess not, unless we're talking about Ethiopians, Haitians, Nigerians, etc. Most black communities are another version of Anglo-American. Their language is and has always been English (please, no ebonics jokes), for one thing, and black communities lack the kind of contented ethnic insularity I'm looking for. Emphasis on "contented". If I'm wrong about that, please illuminate.
