The one thing no one has mentioned so far is that Salinas/Monterey County is much more expensive than the Fresno area. I would prefer the Salinas area myself (even though Salinas itself is not that great), but everyone's situation is different. If home ownership is important, Fresno might be the better choice.

North Fresno and the suburb of Clovis both fit your description of safe with good schools.

Clovis is among the safest cities in California. North Fresno areas have similar crime rates and similar demographics to Clovis. City-Data's crime index (lower=safer):
Clovis: 266.3
US Average: 319.1
Salinas: 417.6

Clovis Unified is ranked one of the best districts in the state. Much of north Fresno is part of that district, while schools in north Fresno in other districts also perform at the same levels as Clovis Unified schools.

City-Data doesn't rank school districts but at another site, Clovis Unified is ranked a 9 out of 10. To compare, Salinas Union High School District was given a 5 out of 10.

US News recognized 4 of Clovis Unified's high schools as top performers but none in Salinas.

If you have a high school aged child and can get them into University High (a public charter school in Fresno) they would be attending one of the top high schools in the US. University High is the 6 time National Academic Decathlon champion among small schools.

US News just ranked University High as the 46th best high school and 10th best charter school in the US. Newsweek ranks it the 80th best HS in the US and 7th best in California. The Washington Post has it as the 85th best in the US and 10th best in California.

If any of you can tell me of areas in San Jose that have good schools and rental homes that wont break the bank I would apprechiate it.

Thank you for all your information. My husband can also choose San Jose. We need to make a decison what area we want to live. I started to research San Jose but was almost overwhelmed with the size. If you have information on San Jose please pass it along.

San Jose pretty much has among the most expensive real estate prices in the entire country. Finding property, even rentals, that won't be very expensive is difficult.
