I like Vacaville, lots of stuff around the area, within an hour of San Francisco and pretty good standard of living for a reasonable cost of living.

About 1/2 hour to Napa Valley.

Also has pretty low crime statistics.

Cheapest place with a climate similar to the Bay Area? Salinas, hands down. Its 11 miles from the Monterey Bay and a strong marine type climate. Since the housing bubble burst its cost of living index is 100 - exactly the US average. Plus the Monterey Peninsula is 30 minutes away with all its activities. I was there last Friday and it was 68 degrees, brilliant sunshine and a fresh ocean breeze blowing in (Salinas is in the top five cities over 100K for air quality in the nation). I also had to be in Stanislaus County that same day (where Modesto is). It was 99 degrees. Nuff said.

lol - exactly. As for "Salinas = crime", just stay out of the east side of town. Its not hard. I lived there from 1997 to 2004 and nothing happened to me. In all those years I knew one person who was a victim of crime - and she was stupid enough to leave her purse behind her pickup seat where she taught school. No wonder it got broken into. Considering the dozens of people I knew there that's a pretty decent record.

Yeah, expensive (Walnut Creek) ... but Woof's got an eye for "quality" ... and quality don't run cheap in a material world.

You could also consider parts of Santa Maria, Atascadero or Arroyo Grande. Cheap is relative, but Arroyo Grande/Grover Beach is relatively affordable for a nice CA beach area. They are further from the Bay Area, but you may desire that distance by the time you retire! All are definitely a much better choice than Stockton!

You mite like Rio Vista, close to the California Delta & on the Sacramento River. Good fishin/ boating.

In the past i've had the idea to buy a used houseboat & moor it out by 9 mile road or over by Bethel Island. Live on it & go fishin'.
