I'd check out zip codes like 93720 (northeast Fresno), 93611, and 93619 (these 2 are Clovis). There are also nice homes in 93711 (northwest Fresno) and 93727 (southeast Fresno).
If you have more specific questions, please ask!

I lived in Fresno for 4 year while attending Fresno State... The air quality is pretty bad... If you or one of your family members has asthma, don’t move to Fresno.

I would choose Modesto over Fresno for a larger city in the Valley. If you want something smaller, a little less hot, fewer tweakers, better air quality and with pretty scenery, try Oakhurst or Sonora. Turlock is a nice town too, just 15-20 miles south of Modesto, pop about 50,000 with a Cal State branch.
Definitely NOT Bakersfield.
Go farther north for better air quality.
If you're really stuck on SoCal, try Orange County or farther south near San Diego (if you can afford it.)

Sorry, I phrased that awkwardly. What I meant was if he/she was going to move to the Valley and wanted to live in a big city, I would choose Modesto over Fresno.

Our #1 reason for leaving the Midwest is bad weather. I see Fresno has decent year round weather, not as good as L.A., but not snow for 5 months like here. Plus we will be only a few hours from L.A., SF and LV. The housing/rent in Fresno is much more affordable too. I'm sure there is a downside---what is the downside??????? By the looks of the rent prices it must have a really bad downside. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Fresno is cool in winter, hot in summer, and mild spring/fall. Nothing extreme. No blizzards. No snow. No humidity.
If you do move, just stay look for a place north of Herndon Ave. or to the city of Clovis.

Get the biggest SUV you can afford. Listen to Rush Limbaugh everyday so you know what to think. Love fast food. Admire BBW. Avoid the downtown or any area within a six mile radius of downtown unless you have to buy your meth or want to hire a day laborer.
In all fairness, they finally got a Whole Foods now, and when we have to visit (family) we use that as our refuge.
People on this forum are correct about the poor air and water quality. But folks there adamantly deny it. They just flip on the air conditioner and think you're crazy for wanting to go outside. Exercise is highly ove rated, you see. . . and my doctor recommends these little blue pills.

Wow. Stereotype much? If you don't want to live in Fresno, that's fine. Don't live there. But an entire post of incorrect generalizations shows that your knowledge of the area is essentially zero. If you lived here for 18 years and these stereotypes are the only things you came away with, I don't think you got out much.
Good luck hanging out at Whole Foods!

Avoid downtown? It is the site of new loft apts and working artist live/work studios. I know several twenty-somethings who love living down there even if they have to commute to school at Fresno State. ArtHop had to become 2 nights a month, there were too many venues to get to in one night.

It can't be that backward if San Francisco's popular Peruvian restaurant Limon just opened a Fresno location.
No one that I know denies the air is bad, but the Bay Area has also now been declared to have unclean air. In fact most of the cities in California have a problem with meeting EPA standards. Check out this map to see all the areas that fail air standards.
Map of 24-Hour PM2.5 Nonattainment Areas | Area Designations for 2006 24-Hour Fine Particle (PM2.5) Standards | US EPA
But thanks for the chance to help get rid of some stereotypes.

hey. well i've lived in fresno for 10 years and the city has really changed for the better it seems. but like every other growing cities it will have its downside. however, if you know where you're going, you'll never ever be in danger. i live in northwest (fig garden) fresno, which is really considered "the rich part" of fresno and i never feel in danger, ever. let me say this though and for all the people here who are from fresno, i went to EDISON HIGH SCHOOL and everyone knows that school is in the thick of ghetto fresno, but never once was i in danger there, ever. the places you need to look out for in fresno is around southeast fresno, east fresno, probably from dakota ave until about olive ave is where gang activity is really high and just be cautious. you said you want to live in LA...the crime there is NOTHING compared to whats going on up here. Oh and if you do want to live in Fresno, be warned that winter = cold and foggy and summer = FIRE. not kidding. its like 110 degrees almost every single day in july. hope this long rant helped
