Default California Transect

I took a trip last week, across the state, sort of, the hard way. Starting at Santa Margarita, taking 58 across to the lovely town of Buttonwillow, then across to scenic Shafter, then on lonely country roads into the Sierra foothills, eventually climbing to 9200 feet at Sherman Pass, then down to the desert at Hiway 395.

From there I rode to the end of California's highest road, and one of the highest roads in the US of A, high in the spectacular White Mountains, a range few have ever hears of, let alone visited. The summit of the White Mountains, White Mountain at 14,252 can be bicycled, if you are hardy.

I finished up by a week at a training school for wilderness law enforcement.

Nice pics. You'd benefit from some mermite panniers on that moto.

If you are really ambitious, perhaps you could duplicate this Transect tour via the Hwy 94 near the border with Mexico, follow Hwy 50 roughly from SF to Tahoe, and follow Hwy 299 from Eureka to Alturas near the Oregon border. That would make for an interesting Quadrafecta.

I had one 'o those too ... had other bikes before, but after a year with that one I says to self "this is the one that's gonna kill ya" ... and I got rid of it ... tried one more bike, a '63 BMW R-50 years later for awhile, but the thrill was gone and good sense prevailed ... so I thought ... got a bicycle and was *whacked!* by a drunk ... worse damage and rehab than my war misadventures.

Two wheels just don't work for me I guess ...

Three thumbs up for the pictures .high

Notice only KLR 650's look good with mermite and ammo cans etc. I think, $100, for mermite cans, or a thousand for Jesse Luggage.... mmm

More trips will come, although I am not likely to go to the ends of the state, just to ride across, the approach march is too far.

You should have parked that 67 BSA,, it would be worth more today than you paid for it then, by far...

Ahh, White Mountain. Love that 20 mile ~8% gradient which kicks up above 10% frequently and 15-18% on occasional. 4,000 feet of elevation gain in 20 miles... brutal.

Great pictures!
