Craigslist seems to have several listings for houses in those areas for prices that I think I could swing and still be able to pay an electric bill every month....Lol! I would like to get others' opinions on the areas as far as neighborhoods, schools, daycares, etc to get an idea of what the people living there are like.
i don't think imperial county is a good place but riverside county might work. temecula and murrieta are close to the border patrol in temecula. it's hot there though!

I missed that you mentioned it was a CBP job. Wouldn't it make more sense to determine what you would like to do within the organization, where your career progression is ideal, etc, and work from there? Rather than just pick a location and work backwards.

I'm not moving yet and may not even go to California, although it is very likely that I might, but with 3 children I like to be as prepared as I can be so I am trying to pull as much information as I can ahead of time so that I am not completely caught blindsided. The comment about career progression and working backwards was off base by a long shot. I know what job I will have and what I will be doing and the options that I will have. I choose not to post all that information because it is not pertinent to the questions I am asking and the information that I am looking for. There are only about half a dozen stations along the border and I will be assigned to work at one of those few areas. I'm not going to be picking where I work but I will be choosing where to live once I am assigned. I asked for information pertaining to housing, schools, etc and information about places that would be safe to live as well as information regarding costs of living in the different areas south of San Diego along the Mexican border. My career options and such play no part in the information that I am looking to find. I just want a general idea of the cost of living in the different areas and find out the areas that I should avoid at all costs seeing as how I have 3 children and worry about their safety along with information about the areas that would be extremely expensive to live in.

Thank you for the information. This is the kind of information that I am looking for. And I'm not worried about the heat. I'm from south Alabama! I'm interested in knowing which areas have higher crime rates and such as that, that aren't as safe to live in, etc. and the areas that have the higher costs of living that would make it that much harder on me to support my children. I have no illusions about the difficulty that we will face with such a move, but within a small amount of time and after we are settled in, things will start to balance out and improve. It just takes patience, faith, and hard work. Oh and the ability to stretch a penny til it screams and still have something left over! Thanks again for the info.

Okay these areas would be where I would be working (one of them not all of them) so anything within reasonable commuting distance from these areas would be up for consideration to live in: Andrade, Calexio, Otay Mesa, San Ysidro, Tecate, and San Bernadino. What are these areas like? What are the neighborhoods like as far as crime rates, schools, cost of living expenses, housing, availability of housing? Small town or big city life living? Close knit communities or everybody for themselves type? Does that help narrow it down better than just saying along the southern border of California below San Diego?

They are all San Diego area border towns except San Bernardino. You will not find affordable housing for a family of four on a $50k salary in the San Diego area. San Bernardino is two hours north in the inland empire. Housing is quite a bit more affordable up there but would still be a struggle on a $50k salary. When I moved out to the inland empire in 2004 I was making $50k, supporting just myself with no debt, I wasn't exactly living large.

i would avoid san bernadino like the plague. i don't know about schools but i'd guess they aren't good. i did okay in riverside county on 30k as a single person. but that's a long commute to the san diego border. maybe somewhere around poway would work?

Just because you're working in San Bernardino (which just filed for bankruptcy) doesn't mean you have to live there. Redlands, Loma Linda, Rancho Cucamonga and certain parts of Riverside are nice, to very nice, and are within a reasonable commuting distance of San Bernardino. The OP has children so the the schools are another big consideration for where you decide to live.
