StandingLenticular, this is the type of info I am looking for. Also, thanks again to everyone who also has answered this post.

I plan to pay Chico a visit in the near future to get a "feel" for the area.

Thanks.

I live 20 miles south of Chico (was just there shopping today). Do not, I repeat, do not let people scare you with talk about winter fog. This end of the Sacramento Valley doesn't get that much (its nothing like the San Joaquin Valley to the south). Generally it doesn't come up much above Yuba City/Marysville and when it does it usually burns off by 10 or 11 in the morning. Also, whenever there's a front coming in (we get our rain in the winter) it blows any fog out that may be there. We've actually had very little "Tule Fog" for the past ten or fifteen years - changing climate patterns.

Winters here are very mild compared to most of the country. I've got an orange tree in my backyard to prove it (and my "winter coat" is a windbreaker most days). Summer's are hot, but there's very little humidity so if you're coming from the eastern part of the country it will probably feel pretty comfortable to you. I lived in the Northern Midwest for a couple years and its nothing like that. We are going to get our first solid week of 100+ temps - up until now the summer has been very mild.

Ozrock, I'm sure Chico can be pretty much what you want it to be. It's a nice town and close enough to a variety of areas to hold your interest.

One can be in the mountains to the east of Chico in the winter and see the fog stretching across the valley to the coast range, true it disappears in times of low pressure, it is formed by high pressure

I bought a truck up in Paradise, it had the old Chevy 216, with splash oil feed, you could lunch the engine on smooth roads. I decided to replace the engine with a 235 with an oil pump from Junky George in south Chico. Since the winter days at my house were cold, I decided to move the truck to my friend's house in Chico where it "would be warmer" not. The fog set in for days and I did the whole job freezing in the fog.

The job market should be enough to scare anyone away from Chico. I love the area, but there's no jobs. I think it will get worse when Chico State **** cans a bunch of people next year after Brown's tax measures fail.

Fireplace smoke in the winter is the worst problem for me in this area. Wood burning is very popular and most days when its not raining or windy there is a layer of smoke hanging over every town around here from early evening to late morning. Chico at least has an ordinance regarding fireplace/wood stove burning on bad days, but its often ignored. Oroville has nothing and smells like a campfire much of the winter.

Once again thank all of you for the insight. I really do appreciate it as this is a very difficult time in my life. It helps me to understand the area a little more. Of course, once I pay the area a visit, I will have a better idea. Does anyone have any suggestions as to when the worst and best times are to visit? In a perfect world, I would be able to visit when both the best and worst of Chico coincide.

As for the job market, does anyone have enough experience with this aspect to tell me if the Chico area is worse than the general US unemployment situation; or about the same. The economy is rough all over, but there are of course pockets around the country where it is worse than other parts. Thanks again.

Butte County's unemployment rate was 12.2% in May vs. 10.9% for the state. Yeah, its fairly high and one really should have a job waiting for them if they move here unless they have a large nest egg to tide them over.

Based on your posts, you need to take a look at San Luis Obispo, I am not sure what Chico means to you, it is a fine town and well worth living in, but, particularly in the meeting women of reasonable age, who have positive progressive outlooks and stay fit all year round, SLO is worth a look.
