Your budget will determine where and how close to the "better" i.e near the beach, and nightlife, you can get.

In Temecula you can buy more house for your dollar but you are further from the nicer weather areas and beach, etc. In So Orange County, which is one of the best areas, along with the North coast of San Diego, your costs go up.

what leonard said. temecula/murrieta aren't just warm, their hot! and it's an hour to san diego from there. the traffic in southern california is pretty crazy all over. so if you're an hour away from someplace (orange county, los angeles county) it can easily take two hours to get there.

some of the beach areas don't have a lot of kids. but the budget is the biggest consideration.

i'm from the bay area and have one friend from london that i met when she moved there in the 80's. she's in Lodi now (central valley) but wishes she was still in the bay area. Lodi is hot too.

the whole area there consists of san fran, the peninsula, south bay, north bay, east bay. all around the bay! san fran is cold and windy. the weather gets better outside of it. traffic is still crazy but it's a smaller area compared to the gigantic sprawl of southern cal.

In SD County look at

Carlsbad (expensive), Encinitas and Leucadia (not too bad for cost) or even San Marcos or Vista, though the drive to the beach will be a bit longer from those two, it isn't bad at all. All get a nice sea breeze in the afternoon. Oceanside is an option but it is not as nice as the others on the coast and has all the beach traffic as it is a major destination.

Definitely rent first.
