if you are coming from the UK, do you have the appropriate visas to enter and work in the US?

i wouldn't call it a retirement village at all. but jobs are hard to find which is why i left. but i also only did admin and accounting work. a lot of people had jobs in orange county or los angeles county and did a LONG, horrid commute. some people now just work from home.

i use trulia for my searching now.

My nephew lived in Temecula with his family for several years, but he had a job in the area (maybe a 20-30 minute commute). They really enjoyed it though - very nice community. Are you primarily focusing on Southern California? Its a big state (larger than the UK and Ireland put together).

thanks 5thgen , commuting won't be a problem for me as l always have to follow the work on the railroads , and the wife does a lot of her working from home in her job anyhow , temecula looks very reasonable for housing costs for what you get for your money , the weather for the wife and lifestyle for the kids is the main reasons for the move , but as their a young age l really want somewhere they will adapt quickly ,
thanks for your advice

I lived in Murrieta, which is next door to Temecula. Temecula is a new and nice city with many shops, restaurants and a great old town with a jillion antique shops. However it is a suburban city not an urban one. Good schools and plenty for the kids to do. However for more amenities and night life fun you will have a long grueling drive both ways. The beach is near, but again a long drive through traffic. It is very hot in Summer though a nice breeze comes through from the ocean in the evening.

I had an excellent real estate person sell my house and she was in Temecula and knows the market and area very well. If you would like her name and info email me privately.
