Default Anyone ever lived in Truckee?

Hi. I lived in Grass Valley for 15 years and moved out of state; however, we were unable to sell our house and may have to move back. Grass Valley was nice, as CA goes, but the summers are too hot and are 6 months long. If we do move back we will probably stay in CA even once the market improves.

I was thinking maybe Truckee. Anyone ever lived there? What's the housing market like? The demographics? Schools? Culture? I'm hoping for a middle ground between hippie, yuppie, and weekend ski bum.

Thanks.

Median home price is around $500,000. Lots of young people, packed into rentals at the west end of Donner Lake.
Schools are absolutely great. Culture? Mountain bikes and skis.
There are a lot of just plain folk in Truckee, but they bought their homes years ago. Pretty durned expensive now, although there are lots of new condo developments going in.

It is, easily the best place in California to live if you like the out of doors and ski. If you are not a skier, the winters are long and hard, or used to be.

Thanks, Jose. That is very helpful. I'm not a skier but I've lived in Colorado and Maine and I love snow.

I have a friend that lives in Truckee. She says it is often times the coldest place in the nation. Don't know if that is true or just how she feels. I do know that it is really cold and lots of snow...but beautiful!! She has lived there for about 18 years.

Year round average low places Truckee as one of the coldest places in the country.
It does not get the cold that the northern states get, 0 degrees is uncommon.
Last night the low was 24, but it will reach 65 today.

Spring Summer and Fall have cold nights, gardening does not work well here, but the days are normally very pleasant, the Autumn air is like champagne. The dogs jump around happily in the coolness.

Yes, Truckee gets a lot of snow, 10 miles west the community of Soda Springs is the most heavily snowed upon community in the entire United States including Alaska.

The further you get from from the summit, the less snow. The subdivision of Glenshire seldom gets more than 15 feet in a year.

Thank you, cynwldkat. Yes, I've read the national weather reports for years, and that's true--several days a year, it's the coldest place in the nation. That doesn't worry me.

It's more a matter of, is this the kind of place "real" people live, or is it just second homes of the wealthy?

I think Jose's comments suggest that it's some of each; if they have good schools, that's a sign of a thriving community. I used to ski, many years ago, so I know some of the area. I've never heard of Glenshire. I'll look into it. Thanks again, both of you.

Glenshire is just one of the subdivisions of Truckee, it and Sierra Meadows are very much the locals area. Tahoe Donner attracts the second home market. Deep snow steep streets.

You have a pm coming

Truckee is exactly a mix of yuppie, ski bum and cowboy and yes a bit of hippie, though that's arguable Sending you good home-selling vibes
