We took a road trip around there last year in early summer. Brookings, Ferndale, Trinidad, the Redwood Highway... took the winding road all the way down to Bodega Bay! It was all a blast!

Oh, I second the recommendation for a trip into Fern Canyon. Very Jurassic park! Tip: We picked up a couple pair of cheap rubber boots from a nearby Wallmart. It made the hike much more pleasant as it's wet and rocky in there. At first we felt kind of dorky, but everyone we passed who's feet were soaked or struggling in sandals where telling us how smart we were and how they wish they'd thought of it.

Also if you do happen to plan as far south as Solvang, (love the miniature horse farm!) Don’t miss taking Highway 1 through Big Sur!

Have a blast, and careful driving on those winding roads!

I like Van Damme State Park, just about 5 miles south of Mendocino, CA.

They have an area called Fern Canyon that is worth a side trip.

Trinadad is great spot to explore the Humbolt coast and Redwood National Park.
I like Brookings too. As well as Gold Beach, in OR. Down in CA, Trinidad is nice, reminds me of a miniature verson of Cannon Beach, but with far fewer restaurants and gift shops.

As far as Eureka, I'm divided on that. On a regular basis, no, I would not want to spend much time there. But for a one-time drive through the area, it may be worth a stop. Although, someone could easily sight-see Eureka, but stay at Trinidad or Fortuna.

To the OP ... if you have not see the coast redwoods, it's worth at least two days. And Crescent City is probably the best place to spend at least one of the nights. Not that Crescent City is a cool town, but that it's an excellent base location for redwood exploring.

Photos below are the Carson Mansion in Eureka, and redwood forest at Prairie Creek. The forest shot is a man from South Africa who asked me to guide him in a couple of redwood parks.

Added one sunset photo taken at Crescent City from in front of the Chart Room restaurant at the waterfront, too.
