Example: My #3 son graduated from CVHS in 2001. He was driving a third-hand 1985 Ford truck (almost as old as he). Some of his classmates were driving brand new German cars. One of them received a new Hummer H2 for a grad gift.

My son survived the trauma of not keeping up with the Joneses.

Ironically enough, in a recent survey I read, Irvine was rated as a top city to raise children.
Top rated, possibly suggests competitive wanna bee's all plastic and fake. The question about the best place to raise kids is sort of nebulous.. By your posts, maybe Ventura county? Just for fun though check out the bay area north... You may just fall in love with it... The Redwoods more than make up for the cool rainy winter... Maybe check out San Mato and Santa Cruz county too.. Bay area vibe is very different than what you are used too...

This also comes to mind because a friend recently moved his family to Santa Barbara, and though I've never been there, it looks and sounds (based on my convos with him) like heaven on earth for a young family.

What are your thoughts? If you didn't want your children consumed by materialism or the "soulless" mentality of some parts of this country, where in coastal CA would you raise your children?
Well whatever you do don't move your family to Satan Beach (in between Venice and Marina Del Rey), they don't have souls there.

Honestly, as a parent it is your job to make sure your kids aren't materialistic. Furthermore, it seems like anywhere that is a nice place to live will have people that are at least somewhat materialistic. Granted these people might be very soulful in their $300 yoga pants.

Where you live will have an impact on the kinds of peer pressure and societal pressures they are exposed to. You can compat any level of such presusre with varying levels of success. Some people get tired of fighting not only what other kids do and act like but also what the teachers are telling them in school. It is not the same everywhere. Yes there is materialism everywhere, but it is a very different levels. Priorities tend to be different in different places. Orange County can be a difficult place to raise well grounded children with good morals IMO, especially south county where the pressure to conform is extreme. Other places are also difficult. Where things will be better depends on you and your values.

Yup, cause Jerry said so. It can still be a gun rack but it's hard to fit a locked gun case into it.

We had wonderful times living in the 'Carmel Valley' (warmer weather). Not far from some fantastic beaches & scenery. We didn't have kids at that time but there are outstanding schools in the area.

We have many wonderful memories of living in Monterey & by Pacific Grove (off David Avenue).

I still love Prunedale. Some of my family still live there.
