Then you have a lot of add-on taxes or the house was very expensive for its day. My parents bought in 74 and pay $900.

Because you don't have to live in some place like Bakersfield or "the hood" to be able to afford it.....

There are numerous nice areas of California that are within the reach of middle-class retirees.

For me....it is not about home taxes...it is about cost of living versus quality of life....infringement on rights...etc.

Infringement on what rights? And yes, it is about cost of living versus quality of life....and you can find just about everything in California from extremely cheap areas that aren't so attractive....to extensive areas that are highly desirable.

Translation, can't have a large magazine assault rifle

Not sure what noihoforus considers quality of life, but I consider half the state public land to recreate in, low to no humidity, big mountains, vast deserts, scenic coastline, a big part of quality of life, especially compared to the midwest or the east, hot, humid buggy, flat to rolling terrain.

If one's property tax is $2400 in California, it means the home is worth, roughly $240.000 or more.

Now, in a "low tax" state like Nevada, that $240,000 house would have property tax closer to $7,200

While I do not have a desire to own a 50 cal or any AKAs....I do feel CA's constant infringement on gun rights...and ever constant changing of their allowed to own gun list is out of controll. Hunting....Fishing...Recreational Vehehicle extreme limitations are over the top. Sales tax...personal tax...gasoline tax.... Infringement on property rights......the list goes on. We the few tax payers enable the non-taxpayers a wonderful way of life in this state. I have lived here long enough and experienced enough other states to realise that a better qualiy of life and more bang for ones buck exists in other states. When traveling.....if one gets out of this state...gases prices drop....grocery quality improves....and in general other than property taxes most things get more cost effective.....and CA is not the only beautiful state in this country

Move to CA in 2012 to retire, buy house next door to first house, pay $5000/yr in tax.
The State Tax of 1% is only a portion of a typical Property Tax Bill in my city... every home... no matter when bought will have about $800 in special assessments added.. 16 last time I counted and that is in addition to the adjusted 1.4% Tax Rate...
