Hello

My husband and I are thinking about moving back to Ca to be closer to family. Idllywild seems like a beautiful, safe, artistic town that is close enough for us to drive to San Diego bur far away from the hecticness of the city. From what I find on the web it looks like it's catered to tourists. Can anyone bring any insight to this? We have a 4 and a 5 year old. Would you guys consider this a family town? Also if anyone has any info to share on their elementary schools I would appreciate it! What are your drawbacks/advantages to living there?

Idyllwild is beautiful. It is up in the mountains and gets snow in the Winter, so much so that you will need chains for your vehicle. Also, to do any meaningful shopping you must come down from the mountain.

Check out the Julian thread in the San Diego section. Julian is much closer to San Diego and has similarities to Idyllwild.

It's a tourist town and you won't have "customers" year round as heavy as the summer or if it snows.

Sure is a nice place to be when the lower elevations are sweltering. Right now:

Palm Springs: 107
Fontana: 101

Pine Cove, Idyllwild: 75

My sister went to a fancy private high school there. Then upset my folks by moving in with Big Mike the Biker,, but then, that was the 70's

If your family is in San Diego, Idyllwild is a little too remote, IMO. We had friends from SD who moved to IW to "get away from it all," and within a couple of years they were back in SD. IW was a little too far from it all, after all; whether you're driving to SD to see friends and family, to catch a show or another cultural event, or to do major shopping (which you really don't want to do in Riverside or San Bernardino these days, and get stuck in traffic), it's a long way down the mountain, and I-15 gets more and more crowded. But the 75 degrees sound like heaven...

Just too far out....20 something miles to Hemet.

I like the idea of living in a small town.....but when you have to go 20+ miles for shopping that is a real PITA.
