I've gone a number or ride-alongs with East Bay Departments... most in Oakland, some in San Leandro and a few with the County Sheriff.

Without a doubt, the Oakland ride-alongs were the most intense... there wasn't time to write tickets... the shifts were spent responding to call after call with priority to offering back-up.

It really is a thin blue line and one that is made much harder when a large portion of the community is indifferent or worse.

One shift was in Montclair... it was like night and day... the homeowners would actually wave and were glad to see a police presence.

More happened in a typical East Oakland shift than a member of the public might experience/know about in a lifetime.

Use to know a Piedmont Police Officer... he also had tremendous community support.

I think community support or lack of support makes all the difference.

I do miss the days when more so than not, Officers lived in the city they served.

Going to school in Oakland, several of the Dads were Oakland Officers or Sheriff Deputies... doubt that happens much anymore.

I really think the department has to spend too much time on being politically correct for the moment... meaning the whims of council or the mayor.

Thank you for your service...

I would argue that they spend too much time being politically correct to appease the public, the public believes cops are #1 overpaid and #2 beat people and shoot people for no reason... every other week a criminal or his family is suing a police dept because the criminal ran from or took a threatening action toward police after failing to comply with orders and was shot and killed... Sac Sheriff is the latest, a $10m suit cause a guy ran from police, was tased, removed the darts and continued to resist and was shot and killed... uh, listen the first time.

Politically correct might be the wrong term...

I was trying to address the mixed signals sent by the politicians... one week it is clear the occupy encampment the next week they are told to stand down... it definitely mixed signals.

Worse, they really don't do anything about it. The re-elect Jerry Brown, a socialist and, I might add, a RECPIENT of said pension program (he is going to get somewhere around 90K a year, for life, for only 17 years of service) and they continue to re-elect democrats in the assembly. In fact, making the assembly a super majority just this election.

So, the same liberal/socialists who cause the problem are now completely in control of the state. And remember, THEY benefit from this pension program. Its THEIR future too. So now what?

What really upsets me is the "people" blame me and others. They don't blame the persons responsible.
It is easier to blame an easy target, you, than accept that they are the problem.

After all you don't get called out to deal with bad police officers as often as bad citizens (Voters).
