Did you get married to the widow next door (that's been married seven times before)?

All of my great grandparents migrated to California between 1850 and 1920. 1 was Irish, 2 were German, and 5 were English. There were a lot of Germans who did, mainly to Northern CA.

It depends on the part of California you are in, as to the White European population that is predominant. My grandparents were in California before 1900, and were Swedish, English, and Dutch. Others in the area were heavy Scandinavian, Swiss, Italian, etc. as well as other nationalities.

Today now that California has fallen from 88% White population in only a few years to 38% White it is rapidly changing. White will become in the minority soon as Hispanics now almost 38% replace them as the major race in the state as more Whites leave the state every year and Hispanics are increasing.

The mix of what country is your white ancestry is decreasing rapidly.

By the way, my German great grandmother who sold flowers on the street corners of San Francisco, refused to speak English (or use electicity). When the right wingers rant about the hispanics doing that, I can assure them that it goes away after a generation.

I think the ethnic history of an area is a valid topic of inquiry. I read somewhere that at some point in the late 19th Century people of German ancestry outnumbered Anglos in the American West. A lot of Midwestern German farmers resettled there, some switching to ranching.

File:Census-2000-Data-Top-US-Ancestries-by-County.svg - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Some great maps to look at the map of the 2000 census. Hopefully they will also do one for the 2010 census.

Based on these maps, as I expected:

Wealthy enclaves based on the San Fran, LA, and SD maps seems to be more english (or WASP), but German ancestry just like in the midwest seem to more German.
