Yes, Chico has a Mall, it wasn't far from where you had dinner. Chico also has many of the big name restaurants, Red Lobster, Olive Garden, Outback, Applebees, Logans Roadhouse,<--- my favorite, and a lot of small family owned diners, many of those are as good or better that the big name places.

Chico State was at one time known as the premier party place. That is changing. Law enforcement has made some significant steps in curbing a lot of the things that Chico had become famous for. The University and bars are also on board with making changes happen.

I don't think anyone would frown upon hiring an individual just because the degree came from CSUC.

I am originally from the Bay Area and attended Chico for my Bachelors and Masters degree. I fell in love with the town of Chico- the friendly people, the campus, the natural beauty, and the pursuit of education. I went to school for Speech Language Pathology. I felt that the class sizes were small-average and the professors were accessible, knowledgable, and personable. The professors actually do know you on a first name basis and they really help you succeed in any way they can. Intellectually, the classes were not as challenging as I expected, but in my first year out, I feel prepared and I think the information was user-friendly and aplicable to real-world setting without deep theoretical jargon getting in the way. Yes, that too does have its place, but I felt that the clinical skills I learned and practicality of the program was worthwhile.

As far as the "party town" that is notorious to Chico...I am a firm believer of "work hard, play hard". If your education is important to you, if your child is mature enough to understand this importance, they he/she will succeed. I found a good balance between school and social life. Coming from the Bay Area where people are not that friendly, this town is full of social interactiion. Going to the grocery store, strangers and employees are sicerely friendly, spark up a conversation, are interested in you. Very pleasant people who know how to relax and enjoy fostering social relationships. Its a social town. Therefore, there is tons of social activty going on, farmers markets, organic markets, restaurants and of course bars and house parties. They are great fun! And yes, some people take it to the extreme. But, not everyone does..like I said, I balanced it, as I felt it was important especially for college, when socialization is important, in my opinion, to compliment education. Overall, I think your child wil really really enjoy Chico and be embraced by the people who reside there. DId I mention that it is beautiful too? SO much hiking, biking, a river through the campus, check out Bear HOle and ALligator Hole... beautiful!!!! Also, table mountain during spring is beautiful... wildflowers everywhere! Thats my soapbox... I would like to eventually get a PhD and teach at Chico one day. Good luck!

I have been thinking of etheir chico or bakers field .

I am a person who lives in upstate new york .I am 22 years old and I find upstate new york too suck . I have been dreaming of moving out west to have wide open spaces and beautiful landscapes with room to roam . Chico and or Bakers field/ Kern county always seemed too be the area i would choose . It is very cheap compared too the rest of california . It has a low crime rate . It is near the mountains . I want too buy a trailor perhaps around kern county ( I Refuse too rent , I see renting as slavery ) . I am a blue collar guy . I would like too start my own landscaping business out west . The other area i was considering was chico california . As well as other states like idaho , utah , montana ect .

Now i like small cities near the rural areas . I don't like living in a area with yuppies or gangs that start trouble . I dont like too live in an area where everyone is soo materialistic and judges people for no reason .I hate areas where people judge you if you do not have the latest fashions , or you do not have 100 dollar sneakers ,or drive the fanciest cars ,or where people will judge you if you have a bit of dirt on your shoes or clothes . or on how expensive and flashy your cell phones are lol . I want too live a simple life , In a simple place , Where it is affordable and people are friendly. I want too live in a place where animals , birds and nature are thriving . I would love too live in an area with lots of park land around and lots of hiking trails .I am more than happy living in a trailor - shacks ect lol . I am a very satisified person . I feel best when i am in nature and live a simple life using my hands .

- For these reasons Southern California is marked off my list lol .

- Now i am a very intelligent guy , Very artistic and Very intellectual . Art , Music , Writting , Reading and Science are a major part of my life . I am also a very tough guy i will hit anyone who tries too mess with me in a blink of an eye lol .I also enjoy riding atvs , dirt bikes and off road trucking ,I enjoy swimming , I enjoy fishing and ocasionally hunting for meat only . Which i would assume kern county is also good for . I am also an atheist , i am very anti religious . I tend too be some where between liberal - and liberterian closer too liberterian as i get older , I am anti war , But pro miltary too a point . I am pro gun ,I am anti regulation . I am anti censorship. I am pro abortion , Pro gay marriage .I am anti theocracy , I am pro Tax cuts for the middle class and lower class . I am anti corporate , I think corporations should be taxed up the ying yang. I am also anti welfare , But pro section 8 and pro aiding food pantries and shelters , I am pro legalizing drugs , I am also pro reducing punishment for small crimes . . I love nature , I love the out doors . I am very tolerent of gays . But intolerent of urban gang cultures ect .
- i live in an area in new york that is about as conservative as kern county anyways , It is very similar too kern county that the area i live in is a few hours from new york city and has a culture much like many areas in the south would have .

- Now i am not a snot nosed upper class suburban kid who won't do jobs " americans " won't do . I am willing too paint fences , work at fast food places , Mow lawns , Pick fruits and vegatables , Farm ,Build walls . Work in city sanitation .Work in construction , Work as a garbage man . work at car washes , Clean toilets ,Work in warehouses , Do janitorial work ,drive trucks ect ect .

I am also very stingy and thrifty and good with money . I tend too save up alot of money easily .

I would rather do anything than sit in an office lol

Do i sound like some one that would do okay in kern county?

But since i am artistic an a athiest would chico be a better bet? Or possibly another state?

Default RN wanting to move to Chico, CA

Hello...I'm currently living in Reno, working as an RN at a local hospital and have been reading and hearing good things about Chico. I'm originally from Santa Barabara, CA and miss the weather, farmer's markets, etc. Very much want to get out of Reno (dry, dirty, gray/brown, 2 seasons: HOT and COLD; too much stupidity, expensive). Chico sounds, so far, like a great place to live. Anybody know how it is to work at Enloe Hospital? I have 2 children; how are the high schools/which one(s)?

Chico has lots and lots of farmers and yes organic food is big around here, and there is farmers market I think 3 times a week during the summer here, and yes a big artist community. The schools are great if you are interested in art. I think CHico is one out of 2 foundries for the fire arts program in CA. You just have to find a good place to live, oh don't live near NORD AVE, college town. OR what we call Chatmann town. That is near the mall, by the fairgrounds area. All I would say if you live in Chico, just don't live in those places, or near the railroad and your okay. The colleges here are great, still small, and teachers are really good.

Oh, well I go to Chico State, seems like most of the kids form SO cal and other places come here really for partying, oh yeah it is big on parties here, you can drive down all of downtown and see all kinds of crap. Bars make a killing, but the college students probably wouldn't tell you that. They love it, and I'm sure they wouldn't tell their parents either. But I'm sure every city that has a college has the party atmosfear. I am in the arts program at Chico State, and I was the only one that was at school late at night most nights while everyone was partying.

Oh and I don't really know much about enloe, just hear bad things from it. The nurses seem like they dont know what they are doing, and there is always strikes. From the ppl that I talk to everone hates enloe and would rather go to another hospital. I always joke that you would go in for a checkup and come out with amputated leg or something.

Oh and this is a small community, so gays, funky hair, and stuff are kind of not looked at so highly, that is what I hate. There really still is a lot of whites and mexicans and not so many asians or other races. Since this is a small community if your from India ppl for some reason think you are from Iran, Afganistan or like Pakistan, so they are very uneducated in that aspect. Nature stuff is great here, fishing, hiking, camping, and so on.

Magalia is not a good place to live if you are not white. I am white and I am saying that. So yeah a lot of skin heads, and racist ppl. Paradise is okay, not much there.

Is it really faster to get between Chico and Sacramento on 99 instead of I-5? My website maps tell me so, but don't you have to drive through Marysville, etc. on surface streets? I haven't been to Chico for several years; last time I went up 5 and down 99, and I seem to remember 99 being "traffic-y" in places. Thanks in advance to anyone who does this trip regularly enough to know! I'm going up there in two weeks and want the fastest route.
