Ah yes, the Tales of Tessie, the monster that is said to dwell in the vast deep depths of Lake Tahoe. On past visits to SLT back in my younger drinking days heard many a tale from locals in the the saloons and pubs about Tessie, with often the same arguement, large fish caught with jaw marks that could only have been caused by a very large creature.

I have not seen Tessie, but, a friend of mine, a former Navy officer saw it.

and one day the employees of the Tahoe City Post Office were sitting on the grass outside having lunch looking out at the lake and they all saw it.

And another friend, worked for the Forest Service, a Jehovah's Witness, very straightlaced and proper saw it.

So, there you go.

Wasn't the recent record breaking fish a salmon? Fishing in Lake Tahoe is so much fun, but I usually don't catch anything bigger than two bite bobs.

Is this lake too cold for bass or panfish?

No not closer to shore. They have them bluegill and largemouth plus a few other shallow water species.

Does it ice over in winter? I'd think it gets some pretty big wind.

No, not enough surface area in relation to it's depth for heat loss during winter as well as it's close location to the Pacific Ocean's mild winters. Several other lakes in the area do freeze over most winters. Donner Lake for example.

In my experience it the best of all worlds. Great Alpine mountain experience with the ability to get away from it within an hour's drive. Something you couldn't get in Colorado.
